There was a time at night just before sleep when Kara recoiled within herself and hated what she had become.  All of her dreams she had as a child had slipped away ever so slowly and now they were all but gone.  Soon she would be able to lay her head down in a safe place and sort everything out, Chicago, Alec and the sale.

Her sleek, black Lexus LS cut through the darkness.  Bugs pelted the windows like rain.  It was late July, the air was hot and heavy and the dew had already blanketed the earth.  She gripped the tan leather steering wheel hard as she turned the wheel and exited off of the highway.  This is the spot she had always lit her last cigarette of the night on her way home as a teenager.  Images of her childhood flashed in her mind as the gravel dust boiled up behind her tires.

Her mother had gone quickly down hill shortly after her father passed.  Doctors diagnosed a heart attack but Kara knew it was a broken heart.  Her mother was just too sad to face each day alone without him.  Kara died on the inside that day but really after she had left home twenty years ago, a little piece of her had died each day.  She knew this now.  Two winters ago she had locked the door of the farmhouse and tried to forget but now it was time to go back.
