A Friend's Gift

In a dark alley I stay
Lying in the darkest days
Fear and pain
Have paid their visits
While joy and love have yet to come

Lying here now
With a tear stained face
I learned the harsh feelings of loss

I came out of the dark
To see a smiling face
Looking upon me
My heart began to race
A girl no older than I
Spoke of things not mean

She went on about her past
Saying she had once felt the same
I looked upon her and a smile came
"Friends," I said
And she repeated.

I had met a new friend
Who gave me
The greatest gift of all:
My smile
