If you look out of the window
You’ll see them coming, they said.
But you waited for hours and they
Never did. None showed, nothing new.

They let you down before. Just going
To leave you with the Garnets for a few
Weeks while we go up to New York
On Daddy’s business. That was months ago.

Time seems to double the longer you wait.
The window gives a view of fields and trees
And blue of sky. Nothing new there either.
No toys. No books apart from the old dusty

Bible old man Garnet shoved in your hands.
Look out of the window became a catchphrase
With those Garnets, their words seem rusty
With age; their bones creak on bending;

Their eyes grey with too much looking.
Old Mrs Garnet’s always humming.
Look out the window. Keep gazing.
Why? You said, no one’s coming.
