"come this way a little

yes

that is good" I say

your fingers wrap around

the baby bark

of this elm

you brought it from the woods

dug with your own hands

the dirt still at your fingers

"that's a junk tree

it's just an elm" I said

when I saw you

coming up the hill

this morning

the sun still behind the trees

I knew immediately

my words were wrong

you had a reason

something deep and unusual

you couldn't tell me

"it's a good tree"

was all you said

looking away

and now I hold this elm

its youth flowing beneath the bark

while you dig

and I am

wondering at your thoughts

you move with ease

and grace

and surety of purpose

a smile

resting at one corner of your lips
