Chapter 2: Sarah's Concern
"Sarah, come on..it's been two weeks." Nathan said softly in my ear, tugging gently on my left arm.
Tears welled up in my eyes for what seemed like the thousandth time. Ever since Nathan had hit her I never stopped visiting the hospital every day. We didn't even know her name.
The slow beep of the heart monitor rang in my ears, it was most of what I could concentrate on besides her still figure. For hours I would watch in frustration, wanting to shake her awake but she was too fragile. The image of scars and bruises we found on her when they prepped her limp form for surgery on the internal bleeding was stuck in my mind.
"I can't go, Nathan. Not until she wakes up. Not until I know she's okay...this happened because of us." I looked up at him, feeling more tears as the old spilled over my cheeks. "This is our fault..."
"I didn't see her, Sarah!" He put his hand on my cheek, catching the tears with his thumb. "I couldn't have stopped in time even if I had..."
I softened into his hand, looking into the beautiful green eyes I had fallen in love with.
I bit my lip and looked towards her again, debating whether or not I should just stop coming back and staying. Then a shuffle made us both turn to the bed.
Her eyes were slits as they adjusted to the light and I smiled softly, looking to Nathan with a smug look and back to her.
"Hi.." I said gently, sinking back into the chair next to her, frowning when she flinched the hand I had been holding, willing with the entire time she was out away from me.
Her eyes widened at the sight of us, not speaking with tears welling up. I wondered then if she was mute.
"Are you okay..." I asked gently, leaning a bit closer and smiling to assure her it was alright.
She watched me carefully, backing as far as she could without falling off.
"Fine." she choked, tensing back up.
"Your name?" I smiled half heartedly, holding onto Nathan's hand as he put it on my shoulder. He lifted my hair so it was out of my face.
"You look suspicious, sweetie...keep your hair out of your face" he whispered, letting go when he placed it all on my back then sat down next to me.
"I....I..." the mystery woman started, but didn't finish, just sort of...shrunk. I followed her eyes. She was looking at Nathan's and my hands locked together. "Y-You were arguing..."
I inhaled sharply and looked to him, had she been awake at one point?
"You were arguing about something.." she came forward a bit "I know your voices..."
