J.D. Gaines is an eighteen year old in his senior year at a small, rural high school in the Midwest. He lives on the farm with his dad, often working cattle and performing other chores. His girlfriend, Aliya, and him have been dating for a few months and are already imagining a future together, even past college. But soon J.D.'s life spiral downward when a national agricultural crisis pits farming families into dangerous competition as this disaster threatens the existence of their own farm. J.D.'s struggles with depression intertwine with his strained relationships with Aliya, his friends and his dad who starts abusing alcohol like he did when J.D. was a baby. While this is occurring a rogue beast is straying through the woods sparking fear inside all country homes. Nonetheless J.D. must strive to alleviate the farm's financial woes while restoring his life with happiness as he tries to salvage his close relationships and even his own life entirely.
