BLIND REVENGE

After a day of hard work at the film studious, Shehara Fernando was busy in her apartment, when the phone rang. A familiar voice at the other end said, oh I’m sorry if I had disturbed you. I just wanted to wish u a happy birthday. Are you busy now Shehara? Yes, replied Shehara. A journalist is on the way to interview me.Yesterday was Shehara fernando’s birthday, but no one knew exactly what her age was. She was in her late seventies. She was unmarried and lived alone in her apartment. She was an actress despite her age, and a clever one too. She had proved several times how talented she was by winning the best actress award for three years. There was enough evidence on her face to say that she had been a beauty in her youth.Shehara Fernando had not met the journalist before. But he had sent more than fifty letters for the last five years. As a fan of hers she had admired her talent. His latest letter said that he had become a journalist and would soon come to interview her. And today in the morning, he had called her asking whether she would be busy in the evening. NO, you can come she said.Shehara Fernando was a proud woman. But she had been curious about this fan of hers. When the journalist arrived, Shehara noticed that he was handsome enough to be a movie star. Oh I am sorry mister I can’t remember your name. she lied. I am Madva Asela, I know how busy you are, Mrs. Fernando, I can imagine how difficult it would be to keep so many names in your memory, he said. You appreciate me, Mr. Madava, would you please sit down. Madava Asela went on, It’s a pleasure to meet you Mrs. Fernando, I Have been looking forward to this occasion for a long time. She was impressed by this young man expressions but she did not show it. They sat down. I brought you some almonds, Mrs. Fernando, I remember you had mentioned almonds as your favorite food. This time she was delighted. How kind this fellow has been she thought. She opened the parcel of almonds and began to eat them without concealing her delight.

Let’s begin your interview Mr. Asela, don’t worry about my eating. Shehara Fernando said. more politely this time. Madava Asela took a pen and a few papers. We all know that your first film was “ Gamana”, how did you feel when you faced the camera for the first time, he asked.

After eating another almond, Shehara began. Well, Mr. Madava, I was a bit shy. But then I realized that acting was the only way for me to make a living. So, naturally I was compelled to do it better. It wasn’t very difficult at the beginning, Mr. Asela. Madava Asela was writing faster. So Mrs. Shehara, you have been a professional actress from the beginning. Didn’t you have other employment? Shehara Fernando’s short reply was no.

The interview went on for nearly an hour. By now, Shehara had become more friendly towards Asela.and he seemed more interested in her life. Shehara you recently won the best actress award for the third time. Were you expecting the award ? Were you happy when you received it? Yes, I was expecting it shehara said proudly. But I wasn’t happy. I was very much satisfied with my performances. Mr. Asela, I am woman who doesn’t care much about happiness. Its contentment that I need.

The Journalist wrote something and looked at Shehara for a while. Then said politely Shehara I don’t intend to bother you anymore. But there is a last question. To tell you the truth Shehara, I have been very curious about this. Yes, Mr. Asela she asked anxiously. Why didn’t you marry Mrs. Fernando? Shehara paused, Mr. Asela may I ask you something. Yes, of course Shehara. Am I truly your favorite actress? She asked. Oh, Mrs. Fernando I didn’t for a moment think that you would doubt me. After all those letters I’ve sent you. Oh I’m sorry, but as an ordinary youth, I would have preferred a young actress. But there is a big difference between them and you.I saw it from the beginning. It was your talent which made you my favorite actress.

Madava Aselas explanation was so unexpected and polite that Shehara regretted asking the question. Never mind Mr. Asela, I just asked through simple curiosity. I decided to tell you a story which no one else knows. But you must swear to me that you will not tell this to anyone else. I may be risking my life by telling you this Mr. Asela. The actress sighed and began I was a beauty in my youth, Mr. Asela naturally I had a boyfriend as handsome as greek statue. We Were both working in a firm which manufactured chemicals for farmers. It is impossible to say how we loved each other. How old were you? Mrs. Asela interrupted. He seemed very interested in her story.

Shehara continued reassured by Asela interest. I was twenty years old. Mr. Asela and my boyfriend Narada Perera was twenty five. It was the first time she mentioned her lover’s name. She stopped suddenly. You must not write this story to the paper Mr. Asela. No,of course not Mrs. Shehara. The journalist assured her. But she wanted to stop the conversation. I’ll be brief. Mr. Asela, Shehara said, she went on Narada Perera was a clever chap. The owner of the firm offered the chairmanship and Narada Perera agreed to marry his daughter in return. My world shattered. Needles to say how I felt. Can you imagine Mr. Asela, what I did? She seemed to be hesitating. It was clear that she wanted to stop the conversation. Madava Asela realized that she was upset by something.

It’s okay Mrs. Fernado I will not bother you anymore. Can you please sign this form conforming my visit here. I have to hand it over to the editor he said. When Shehara took the form, The journalist continued to talk. I’m sorry Shehara, I think you will not like to hear my honest opinion about your tragedy. Because of the unfortunate incident, you became an actress, what Narada Perera did was shameful. But on the other hand he gave us a great actress and today, we your fans, are proud to have an actress like you. Please don’t misunderstand me Mrs. Shehara, the journalist concluded.

As Madava Asela talked Shehara signed the form keeping her eyes on Asela. She gave the form back to Madava. Mr. Asela I agree with your opinion. But do you think that we should forgive Narada Perera? She asked with a trace of anger in her voice. No of cource not.Asela repied. Again Shehara talked without letting Asela interrupt. I punished him, Mr. Asela, can you imagine wat I did? I blinded him. I took my revenge. After all, I was a young beauty. It was not very difficult for me to put some chemicals into his eyes. Those blinded him slowly. I took my revenge.

Madava was silent for a moment. Then he said you were brief when you told your story. I am afraid I also have rather amusing story to relate. I assure you, I’ll also be brief Shehara, Madava Asela said. You took your revenge Shehara, and it’s Narada Perera's turn to take his revenge. I don’t understand. Mr. Asela, Shehara said.Oh I’m sorry Shehara I should clarify. This Narada Perera happens to be my father. Shehara Fernado was stunned.

You are not a Perera, she managed to say after a moment. Yes, I am.I am Madava Asela but I avoid using my surname. Shehera looked at Madava unable to speak. He went on. I am the chairman of the recently establiehed eye donation society. You blinded my father, but he married the daughter of the owner of the firm. He is my grandfather. And my father has three sons including me, the youngest. He has a brilliant reputation as the chairman. He still is the chairman of the firm..

Shehara Fernando saw the picture She was listening unbelievingly, without making any attempt to say anything. Madava asela went on. We could have easily replaced his eyes, shehara, but he refused. Can you imagin why? He also wanted revenge. I devoted a great deal of my time to see your films. To write all those letters to you.But I am not a fan of yours. I am not journalist either. Asela wanted to provoke her. My favorite actress is that young beauty Sulochana de silva, not you, shehara.

Shehara Fernando was livid. She struggled to say something. But failed, can’t you realize Shehara, that everything was planned. My father has been waiting for this occasion for nearly fifty years. Do you know what he wishes? He wants to see the world through your eyes, shehara. Through the eyes of the woman who blinded him. We tried to change his idea. But he refused. So here I am his loving son, to see that his dream becomes true.

Shehara managed to laugh weakly. You will never be able to do that. How can you take the eyes of a living human being. I wont let you touch my eyes. You wouldn’t dare. She said with a new energy. Shehara you have already donated your eyes. I should have told you, that form you signed. Asela laughed insolently. You have agreed to donate your eyes to the eye donation society after your death. You should have read the form before signing, Shehara.

The sudden realization dawned on her. Your talk prevented me from reading it. She said trembling. Madava Asela

laughed again insolently. Shehara went on. You have to wait until my death. Before that I’l l change my agreement.Madava Asela laughed again, louder this time.

You are like a child Shehara. Those almonds you ate, Oh I should have warned you. They were poisoned. You’ll be dead within the hour. I’ll phone the Police. Shehara screamed and made an effort to rise, but failed. She sat down again as though paralyzed. Don’t bother Shehara, I’ll inform the police myself. He laughed, even louder this time. Nobody except my father knows that I came here. So after your death I’ll inform the police. I won’t bother to tell them my name. And when they come here I’ll be gone. When they find the form with your signature, They Will send your body to the eye donation society. Very simple Shehara. Within two or three days after your death my father will see the world through your eyes, It’s the most perfect revenge. Madava Asela laughed provocatively.

Get out of here, Shehara screamed. Oh no Shehara I should wait for you to die. Shehara Fernando died, cursing bitterly. But her curses were drowned by Madava Asela Pereras insolent laughter.

The End.
