MISSION IMPOSSIBLE

It was a village hundreds  of miles away from the capitol, a village which was yet to be completely touched by the modern hand of development. Surrounded by a majestic greenish mountain and considerable acres of farm land its occupants were counted in the few thousand. Despite the remoteness and the less number of people, this village had the benefit of electricity and a limited bus service. Near a mountain, small yet a beautiful house loomed into view, well grown vegetable beds surrounded the area. These vegetable beds and a little house belonged to an elderly woman who was in her late seventies. Most people found it difficult to believe that Shamini Lawrence took care of such a large number of vegetable beds by  herself, but she did. She was in an excellent state of health. Yet because of the insistence of her son, she kept a servant Girl who helped her to manage the kitchen work.

Shamini Lawrence’s son Sarath Lawrence seemed glued to the mirror since his arrival last evening. Sarath Lawrence was Shamini Lawrence only one child. He worked in the secret police. Despite the remoteness of his village he often visited his mother. A countless number of attempts to take Shamini Lawrence to the capitol had failed. She preferred the peaceful and quite life of the village. Sarath Lawrence spent a life of movement and adventure. Instead of the less active job of the ordinary policemen he had chosen the more active and dangerous life of the secret policeman. Although his profession often caused him to spend endless number of sleepless nights and hours of intense activity under maximum stress, he loved the work he did immensely.

Shamini Lawrence observed her only one child as curiously as always, his change was considerable. Despite his young age Sarath Lawrence  usually had a completely grown normal hair with a face which was mostly covered by fully grown beard. His appearance was a simple necessity of his profession, for it often compelled him to change his appearance. Sarath often went to the underworld in various disguises. Whenever a disguise was necessary he simply changed the hair and the beard as he had done now.

His beard was completely shaved and hair was completely curly, you’re in a new disguise, asked Shamini Lawrence. Sarath turned from the mirror looked at his mother and sighed. Yes, he replied. I may be facing the most risky mission in my life. As a habit he told everything he did to his mother. There is an organization which handles drugs, over the years it has become a threat to the country .It’s organizing power is unbelievable. Its membership is vast, as we believe a number of rich businessman are involved. But we don’t have accurate evidence to arrest any of them. The few members we’ve been able catch haven’t revealed anything of importance. Sarath Lawrence paused, and sighed. So far all the attempts to penetrate this organization have failed. Three of my colleagues lost their lives in the attempts. It’sa gathering of ruthless and cold criminals. Mother and son fell silent.

It was not in the nature of Shamini Lawrence to discourage her son, even if she did, she knew it was useless. For Sarath Lawrence was a man who did not know fear. How do you expect to accomplish this if it is so difficult Shamini asked breaking the silence. We’ve been able to catch a considerably wealthy businessman of the organization. I am aware of every necessary detail. First, I am going to play casino with rich men. Sarath smiled. I have two hundred thousand rupees in cash mom, but I am only taking a hundred thousand with me, I’ll come for the rest of the money later. The government has spent two much money to catch these criminals, all were failures. Sarath Lawrence smiled again, as you know mom I’m not used to failure. For the first time Shamini Lawrence smiled with satisfaction.

Two hours later Sarath Lawrence left his house and mother to be in the company of unknown and dangerous men. Once again Shamini Lawrence was isolated among her vegetable beds. For this servant girl had gone home. She watched her son become a dot in the distance. He was the only one child she had. Her late husband had been a soldier. When he died in world war two, Shamini’s shock  had been overwhelming. She had very nearly gone out of her mind. But she had recovered. For there was a son to be taken care of and loved. She often wondered why both husband and son chose to spend dangerous lives, despite the busyness of their professions they had cared for her all their lives. Now, that her husband was gone there was only the son whom she loved immensely. He was the reason she lived.

Two weeks later in the morning Sarath Lawrence returned to his headquarters. He was not recognized by his colleagues because of his disguise. His inspector senerath Perera addressed him. Sarath you seemed to be exhausted, sit down, be comfortable and take your time to explain. They were alone in the inspector’s room. I’ve been playing casino, Sarath begun. I have lost all the money, except the hundred thousand rupees I left at home. I’ll collect them on my way back. But I need another hundred thousand rupees. That would be difficult, said the inspector. That’s not my money. You would be amazed at what I’ve learned. I’ve identified three people who are definitely members of the organization. Sarath Lawrence revealed three names, stunning the inspector, for they were men who were honored by most. Sarath had further uncovered a place where drugs were being packed. It’s a morgue at the government hospital, he went on. I don’t know for certain where drugs are packed but, they insert drugs packets into the bodies which are to be buried. They never choose bodies which will be burnt. That’s why drugs are safely transported to the cemeteries .After the burials, they dig up the bodies at night and take the drug packets away. That must one of their methods they must have several other ways said the inspector. But aren’t the drugs packets affected by the fluid of the rotting bodies, he asked. No replied Sarath, because of their water proof packing system they aren’t affected at all.

It took two hours for the money to be approved and another two hours for them to be brought from  the bank. Sartah was ready to leave. Inspector, observe the bodies in the morgue, he said. Observe carefully the people who transport drugs, but don’t make any immediate arrest. Yes, I know said the inspector. I’ll see mother on my way and take the other hundred thousand rupees. Sarath said, after a day of rest I’ll return to the casino clubs. I’ve got to keep playing casino. Sarath Lawrence smiled. I’ll do my best he said as he left. You are to be commended said the inspector.

At about twelve in the afternoon, of the same day inspector Sanath Perera arrived at the morgue with four other secret police officers. As usual they all wore civilian cloths. They gained entrance to the morgue showing their secret  police identity cards. There were several bodies. The inspector removed the shirt of one of  the bodies. He could barely discern the mark of a cut across the body which was nearly six inches in length. He tried to separate the muscles. But they had been sewn delicately. He cut the stitches using the a scissor. The other police officers covered their noses. Inside the belly of the death body they all could see the brown colored packets inserted. The inspector went near another body. He gasped,  his face lost color for the shock was unbearable. What he saw was the tortured death body of Sarath  Lawrence. The other policemen were stunned into silence. The inspector came to his senses, and gave rapid instructions. The three of you stay inside the morgue and arrest anyone who enters. If it’s necessary use your weapons. You come with me. He motioned to another police officer and rushed outside, of the morgue.

Within two minutes inspector senarath Perera was inside a car which sped down the streets with a tremendous speed. The other policeman was driving. They were going to Sarath Lawrence’s house in the remote village, the inspector explained  what was beyond the comprehension of other policemen. They killed Sarath Lawrence and one of the criminals has disguised as whom Sarath had disguised. He was the one who came to see me , this morning. Oh, Jesus I gave him hundred thousand  rupees. Why are we going to Sarath’s house now.Aasked the other policemen. The bastard who came to see me said that he was going to see sarath’s mother. There’s another hundred thousand  rupees at that house. He will kill the old woman to get that money. Drive fast and safe, said the inspector. They saw a police car a little distance behind them and to their surprise on their way they saw a barricade which was erected. Policemen were stopping and inspecting all the vehicles. Senartah Perera’s car was also stopped. Three policemen  surrounded the car. The inspector took his identity card and showed it to the policemen. We are in hurry he said . You’re  inspector Senerath Perera? asked one of the policemen who was outside the car. Yes, inspector replied. Please get out of the car inspector, a policemen said, why? The inspector asked. You are under arrest. What?

Within two minutes inspector Senerath Perera and the other policer office were forcibly entered to the car which had been following them. What have I done? The inspector asked bursting with anger . A policemen who seemed to have authority answered. You have  connections with drug dealers, inspector. The shock inspector Senerath Perera felt was paralyzing. We observed you through a whole in the morgue . The police officer said. The inspector recovered from his shock  and said. Ill see about my self later but send a vehicle with armed men to the place where I was going. He explained that Sarath Lawrence was dead and his mother’s life was in danger. We don’t have enough officers to send that far the police officer replied. We’ll do something in the morning he said. Too late.Shouted the inspector. I am sorry was the reply he received.

At about four o clock  the same evening the man who  had disguised as the man as whom Sarath Lawrence had disguised, reached Shamini Lawrence house. She was surprisedto see her son ride a motorbike . The man got down from the bike with a smile. From where did you find the bike? She asked. I came for the money mom, I am leaving tonight, that’s why I borrowed this bike from a friend. The man replied . You seem to be happy, the mission must have been successful Shamini remarked. Have I ever failed mom, the man asked, smiling. I knew, I knew Shamini said. They spent  nearly two hours in conversation. Later they worked among the vegetable beds. With the sun going down the entire garden looked like a beautiful picture drawn by an artist. The man inspected  the vegetable beds interestedly. Son, aren’t you changing the clothes. You are still in the disguise? Shamini asked. I’ve got to leave after dinner mom, the man reminded her. Oh I forgot  I  prepare a good dinner , she said. They reached a pit which had been dug to build a toilet . They peered inside, is the depth sufficient son? Shamini asked. I think so was the mans reply. He was still peering inside the pitl. They were on the edge of the pit. Suddenly Shamini paused the man with all her strength . The man fell into the hole. Mom, how can you call me mom? You are not my son. Shamini shouted with overwhelming rage. No matter wherever my son went. he sent me a telegram every week. Saying that he was well and alive. He did it from the day he joined the secret police. If the telegram failed to arrived I were to understand that he was dead. For the last two weeks I didn’t receive the telegram. There was a water pump near the pit in which the man had fallen. It’s pump was aimed into the pit. The toilet pit was eight feet in depth. The man inside the hole was barely five feet and six inches tall. He couldn’t climb the pit himself. He even couldn’t touch the pump which was aimed into the pit. I have been expecting you. Shamini said as she switched on the water pump. The water begun to pour in. But it was slow , for the well was a considerable distance away from the toilet pit.

Shamini  Peered inside the hole, now tell me what you did to my son or drown in the water she said suppressing her anger. Please don’t kill me, the man said. I’ll tell you everything . Shamin switched off the water pump. You made the first mistake man. Shamini said. Now, I know for certain that you are not my son , now tell me the rest.

Miss Shamini your son disguised as one of our members and tried to penetrate our organization. We found it , our leaders were furious. They killed him and learned everything. We made a plan to take revenge from your son’s superior. Your son disguised as a colleague of mine, I disguised as that man. I went and meet inspector Senarath Perera. The names of three businessmen were revealed, I said they were involved with us. But in truth they have no connections whatsoever with us. I told the inspector that the hospital was used to pack the drugs, that drugs were transported inside dead bodies which were in the morgue. In truth we never used such amateurish methods but, we wanted to trap the inspector. So we inserted drugs packets into three bodies. We had previously informed policemen with higher authority that the Inspector Senerath Perera was having connections with drug dealers. For the last three weeks he was secretly watched by  other policemen. The morgue is under constant observation. Once Senerath Perera open the bodies with drugs packets inside them his caught. Your son’s body is also in the morgue. Shamini went pale at the news but after a few seconds she spoke again. You can’t easily ruin the career of such an  inspector, she said doing everything to suppress her rage. We can, Miss Shamini in specific places in the inspector’s garden we have buried drug packets. Soon the police will find them. We’ve some of our colleagues in prisons, they will  tell that the inspector had connections with us. We’ve even prepared accounts with vast amounts of money in the name of the inspector. You see Miss Shamini, we can even duplicate his signature precisely. An inspector of such salary can’t afford to have such a large account. We will reveal everything to the police in time, the inspector is trapped Ms. Shamini we’ll provide irrefutable proof. Why did you go to all those troubles to trap the inspector? Shamin asked. He and your son caused us so many troubles Miss shamini the man replied.

Shamini Lawrence once again switch on the water pump. The water begun to pour into the pit. Don’t kill me. Yelled the man, Shamin’s rage burst out, you bastard, do you know what you’ve done? My only one child, you killed him. A life time of dreams, hopes, and brilliant reputation. Shamini Lawrence began to cry and weep uncontrollably.

After a while She ran towards the house. Seconds later she reemerged with a big axe in her hand. She came and sat at the edge of the pit. You try to climb out, ill split your head to pieces, she yelled. The water kept pouring in. Despite Shaminis threat the man did his best to climb out, but the long journey had exhausted him, and the tank was too deep. He shouted, and yelled but no one except Shamini heard his voice, for the nearest house was a half mile away. Even the servant girl had gone home. You crazy woman don t kill me, keep me alive and inform the police. I will tell everything, that innocent inspector can be set free, the man yelled. I will tell them everything myself Shamini said. She seemed perfectly calm now. They wouldn’t believe in you. The man protested, I will convince them, Shamini answered. At about eleven o’clock that night Shamini Lawrence slowly rose from her sitting position and walked slowly towards the house.

Early at dawn the next day a police car came to a rapid stop in front of Shamini Lawrence house. No one was to be found. They begun to search the garden, the policemen came near the toilet pit and peered inside. They started in horrified silence at the dead body which was floating in the water. As if, from nowhere Shamini Lawrence appeared with smile. Why were you so late? She asked. We should hurry she said. For what? A policemen asked. To give my son life she replied. You see I have the money, she said with a smile. It took a while for the policemen to understand that Shamini Lawrence had gone mad. The only one chance inspector Senerath Perera had to prove his innocence was gone.
