What makes up a family is a mom, dad, and at least one kid. To me, this is true. Most people have a whole family. That is what I use to have. I use to have everything a person needed to make a family, until that changed. In my half of a family, I have a mother, I'm the kid, but I am missing a father. I am missing what completes a family. My father died when I was ten. I still remember that day, even though I am sixteen now. I got my name, Olivia, after my dad's mother. He said I would grow up to be a strong, independent women. Ever since, I have been living to be that type of person. I've worked hard in school, taken care of my mother when she told me she hated me, made good decisions in my life. I do my best, but I stiil don't feel like I matter. I have always wanted to feel the love of a family, to let my father know that I miss him. I never thought I could, but all of that changed......

My day startes at 6:30 A.M. with my mother, Demi, waking me up to get ready for school. My mother has changed a lot. She use to always have a smile on her face. Now, she stares at me with a hateful expression, not even a hint of a smile. "Get up for school so you can give me some peace", she says blunlyl and walks out of the room without a hello or good morning. I am use to this, so it doesn't get to me as I get up to take a shower. Once I am dressed, I have a muffin and some orange juice. I stand on the porch and wait on my friends, Amanee and Caleb, to pick me up. Amanee and Caleb have been part of my life since I was little. They cried with me at my father's funeral, stayed with me when I pushed them away, and wiped my tears as I grieved. I would have never gotten through this without them. "Come on Olivia!" Amanee shouted, bringing me out of my trance. This brings a smile on my face.I get a big hug from Caleb. He isalways ready togives me hugs when I need it. "Good morning sleepy head", he says as he releases me. Amanee passes me a cup of coffee, knowing that caffine is what I need. I take a deep gulp and sigh. Now I am awake and ready for the day, forgetting my problems at home. "It's a beautiful day!"Amanee says joyfully. "A school day is never a beautiful day", Caleb says sluggishly. The only reason he goes to school is to get out of the house. If it wasn't for that, he would never show up. That is because his mom never allows him to do anything because she thinks it will corrupt his mind, so he tries to stay out of the house. When we get to school, the parking lot is crowded with a bunch of people. I can see the nerds, loners, and the barbies, all sitting on cars or walking around the parking lot. Everybody is absorbed in a conversation except this one boy sitting on his car at the end of the parking lot. Curiosity takes over me and I walk up to him. "Hey, what are you doing all the way over here?" I ask as I observe hime. He has dark hair, green eyes that shine in the sun, and olive skin. "Waiting to get this day over with", he says boringly. "Me too, are you new?" I ask, realizing that I have never seen him before. "Yeah, my name is Ethan", he says. My name is Olivia; it's nice to meet you". We talk until the first bell rings, and we gather our stuff to go to our first class. "See you around?" he asks. "Yeah, good luck", I say as we go our seperate ways.

"I see you made a new friend", Amanee says in first hour as Mrs. Morrison teaches about Louisiana's economy and how scarcity is not yhe same for person. "Yeah, his name is Etahan", I say, not ready to have the conversation that is coming. I know that there is no avoiding it. "Why were you talking to him, do you like him?" she says, her eyes full of interest. I see Caleb's curious eyes on me. "No! he is new, we just met today! I whispered loudly. He seems cool, but i barely know him. I can't make friends without her thimkimg I'm trying to get a boyfriend. She turns toward the teacher, knowing that the conversation was over. That is what I like about her. She knows when to stop. She doesn't keep going until you say something that you will regret. We listen to the rest of the lesson until the bell rings and we all head out of the classroom. As I walk to my locker, I look around to see if Ethan was in the hall. I don't see him, so I go to my locker to get my science book. I hear someone walk behind me as I am closing my locker,I recognize him immediately. "So this where your locker is", Ethan says curiouslyI assume that he is going or coming from math because he was carring a math book. "Yeah", I say. I see Amanee smiling at me from across the hall. I ignore her and we walk to my next class before parting ways. I don't see him for the rest of the day unless we run into each other, hurrying to our next class. At the end of the day, I am waiting for Amanee ans Caleb so we can go home. As I am waiting, Ethans comes and waits with me. "Did you have fun on your first day?" I ask, trying to start a conversation. "Good, no enemies so far", he says happily. We sit there for a couple minutes. "This might seem weird because we just met, but I want to give you my phone number", he says as he hands me a piece of paper with his phone number on it. "I might as well give you mine", I sat, not minding giving him my number. Finally,I seeAmanee and Caleb running to the car. "Hello love bird', Caleb sys as he gets in. "For the last time, we are just friends!" I yell. We end up argruing about Ethan until we get to my house. My good day goes down the drain, and my heart hammers in my chest. I hate it here; it doesn't feel like my home. I don't want to face my mom. I don't want to hear her screaming at me as she tells me how much she hates me, and how my father's death was my fault. I could handle her grim moods, but I can't handle her mental abuse. I get out of the car with shaky hands. I gather the courage to put one foot in front of the other. I am almost to the door when Amanee calls my name. "If somehting happens, call me", she says. Caleb looks at me with his eyes full of worry. They know how my mom is. They know what will happen as soon asI walk through that door. "I'll be fine", I lie, hoping that they couldn't see the worry on my face. I wave goodbye and walk straight into my personal hell.
