It's a tragedy that news reports of shootings seem to be a constant source of dejavu as they seem to happen so often. It is a tragedy that children must grow up wondering if they will be safe as they go to school or to the movies or to the grocery store with their parents. This poem is dedicated to all those who have died in these senseless acts of violence, specifically the children who are affected by them.

Through a child’s eyes,

was just a normal trip to the mall.

A chance to pick out a new toy;

maybe a soccer ball.

Creating a day of joy.

Through a child’s eyes.

There is confusion mixed with screams.

Echoes ring down the aisles;

ending hopes and dreams.

As red food coloring stains the floor tiles.

Through a child’s eyes.

Shopping lists drop as shelves provide cover.

People are running and falling to the floor.

Sisters are hugging their brothers,

as they pray for no more.

Through a child’s eyes.

Kids get separated from parents in the haste.

As more echoes ring through the meat section.

Some connections would never be replaced.

Taken away by aggression.

Through a child’s eyes.

They didn’t know they would appear on the nightly news.

As they were shielded by a courageous man.

Their neighbors would gather in pews.

Wondering if this will lead to a plan.

Through a child’s eyes.

Echoes ring through different aisles and different cities.

Seen by children day after day.

But the adults don’t seem to take pity.

As they ignore the fact that this isn’t okay.

It was just a normal trip to the mall.

A chance to pick out a new toy;

maybe a soccer ball.

A day not filled with joy.

Why, why must this be seen

through a child’s eyes?
