A Self-Portrait of an Egotistical Artist

My eyes follow you
Haunting; mourning.
A beast behind bars
Hunting; imploring.
I crave sight, not taste.
Attention starved.
Upon my canvass
Let eyeballs carve.
You do not come near,
See, admire.
Inferior dust
Quells desire.
You do not see, nor,
Therefore, believe.
 My work, my beauty
Ignored, I grieve.
Wrath finally comes.
I flew through sins
And stages of grief
Awake, begin.
Villains tell stories
And banshees shrill.
I’ll tell you my tale
Before I kill.
Pictures worth thousands
In dollars; words.
I spent my lifetime
On colors blurred.
So ardent, I swore
Myself to frames.
A perfect picture
In painting tamed.
Forever frozen
In perfection.
My blessing disguised
By dejection.
Realize my genius!
Envy, adore.
Because come morning
You’ll be no more.

A/N: My Saturday plans got canceled and prefer to update my stories on weekend nights, so I had one more day to work on a poem and I’m so glad for that! This is the longest poem I’ve ever written and it took me three hours. Poems usually take me fifteen minutes. This was inspired Le Portrait de Petite Cossette, but it really took on a story of its own. Typically I’d annotate the thing in my author’s note, but the only thing I’m willing to give away is in the title. It’s told by a portrait of an artist. It’s a self-portrait. It has some supernatural elements. That’s all, the rest should be obvious. I love freaky stuff lately, maybe because I just grew balls. For my first time readers, I only write, like, fifty percent dark stuff. I love the dark side, but I can be pretty funny, too. I hope. I think it’s important to be well rounded. *sniffs indignantly* anyway, I don’t have very much experience with gothic writing, but I think I pulled it off. The final contestants for the poetry contest I’m entering are Polyhymnia’s Lament, Little Black Voice, and A Self Portrait of an Egotistical Artist.
