She asked me to squeeze

her throat.  I said no, I couldn't.

But persistence won out.

I was thirteen when

I first saw a dead body.

He was watching television

next to the window in front.

I watched him as I rode across

the lawn.  His eyes seemed strange,

but I didn't know until ambulances

quietly pulled into the driveway-

He'd been dead all day.

She looked too young to be sad.

When asked how she let

him drink himself to death,

she became defensive, stopped crying.

I only wanted him to be happy.

My father told me

that she was a liar.

But then again,

he'd never been in love.

I always wanted to ask.

Even before, but especially now-

Did I seem passionate to you,

or just eager to please?
