Wise is he who knows

that he does not know:

this Socrates knew—

and was called wise.

He ran circles around others

and around himself,

dizzying the others,

circling eternally himself.

The same point he orbited,

ridiculing and honoring,

looking but not touching,

never beyond its range.....

Until he tired, lost his balance,

collapsed exhausted and weary,

without a fight for life to find,

indifferent to his fate.

To live, he at last said,

is to be sick a long time,

and he drank the hemlock

glad it had come to an end.

But if Socrates was wise—

a man who does not know—

how did he judge life so

without also claiming to know?
