She sniffed,"Mumma..." She coughed, for a moment ash filled her mouth. Little Ariel couldn't remember how she'd gotten there; she just knew that right now she was buried in ash. Ariel popped up from the ashes and slowly looked around, surveying her surroundings.

There were no buildings around, nor was there any people. But there should have been. This was where she'd been born and raised! Instead of signs of civilization there was ashes everywhere. As though these were the burned remains of...

No! She whimpered and wrapped both of her arms around herself as the wind blew through her thin gown. Little Ariel winced as the cold wind brought the ash towards her and made it cling to her arms, the gown and her legs. She blinked down at her gown; her gown looked burned and torn in several places as well.

"Momma!" Ariel called out even as silence reigned. She was alone. Ariel shivered and took a few steps; her feet crunching oddly on the ashes. Where was her momma? "Mom--" She coughed and spit as the ash was blown into her mouth yet again.

She continued to whimpering as she moved on, walking down where the streets should've been. This should have been her street. Her neighbors should've been out enjoying the sun, the neighborhood kids should've been out playing. Her momma and daddy should've been there to tell her that this was all just a nightmare!

"Moooomma!" Her call brought no reply. Ariel was really and truly alone. Why though? Why was she the only one here? Surely there had to be someone around! She couldn't be... The only one here. Maybe they were buried in the ashes! Or maybe they were just playing hide and seek!

Desperately she tried to believe that but even as a little girl she couldn't deny the truth. Ariel really and whole heartedly tried though. She ran through the ashes, kicking them up and looking for her friends. Momma and daddy were really good hiders though even for dragons and it'd take some time to find them.

She searched high and low for where her friends were hiding but after only a few minutes it was growing increasingly obvious that something was really wrong. Ariel kept coughing every other second as though she were allergic to the ashes. Ashes continued to accumulate on her skin and her clothes alike. Her hair was dusted with it and she was alarmingly close to getting it in her eyes.

"Hello...? Is anyone there...?" Her voice was growing hoarse and with this last statement she'd finally given up. Falling to the ground she curled up into a little ball, digging her knees into her chin. Then she started to cry. Ariel couldn't avoid the inevitable reality any longer!

Her momma and daddy were dead. Along with everyone else she'd ever known.

She didn't notice the shadow cast over her until the person spoke,"What are you doing in such a place as this young one?" When she looked up she saw that there was a woman there staring down at her with an almost emotionless expression. She was scary but somehow Ariel knew that she meant no harm.

Sniffling she mumbled,"Mommy and Daddy are dead!" She buried her head into her knees and started to cry once again. As she cried the woman standing over her did nothing to comfort her. It wasn't until she was reduced to sniffling that the person spoke.

"Would you like to come with me then? I'm traveling to find a dragon's family." Ariel stared up at the woman without an answer. She was so tired. Why should she leave the only place she'd ever known? When Ariel gave no answer the woman sighed,"There's nothing left for you here. You should find happiness else where."

Still she didn't speak though she gave a tiny nod in response. Ariel jerked back in surprise as she caught sight of black, slimy tendrils of blackness snaked around the woman's figure. What were those things?

The woman must have caught her staring at them because she waved a hand dismissively,"Don't mind them. They won't harm you." She didn't seem particularly worried that the shadowy tendrils would harm her. The woman wasted no time at all in kneeling next to her and holding out a hand to help her up,"We must move before the sun set. My name's Diana. What's your name?"

Ariel hesitated, staring uncertainly at the strange woman, who was named Diana, before she reached out a hand and grabbed the woman's. "My name's Ariel."
