I woke to the sound of running feet, but I was unaware of where they had come from. Did they come from my closet that stood open in front of my bed, or did they come from the darkened abyss in the hallway? I wasn’t entirely sure what to think. I straightened in bed and glued my eyes to the closet and waited. What was I waiting for I was not quite certain, but I sat there with open eyes. Feeling a chill run up my spine I tugged the covers close to my chest that held my frightened, drumming heart. I was waiting for eyes I suppose, those eyes of evil that came from horror movies. Those blood red eyes that would awaken within the black abyss of my closet with a grunt and a growl as the creature within preyed on me and ready to devour my young soul. I pulled the covers closer now up over my nose underneath my eyes, ready to shield them from whatever terror was to be revealed. But as I starred and waited, quivering with a rapid heartbeat and an urge to piss myself, the devilish eyes remain asleep, waiting to devour me another day.

I shoved the covers away from my face releasing a sigh of relief until a series of faint giggles caught my attention from out in the hallway. They were high pitched and sounded like girls laughing, but to what? Underneath my bedroom door, the light from the hall crept in followed by more high pitched, girly laughter. I was drawn by curiosity that commanded me to venture towards the sounds and I obediently obeyed. Sliding the covers off my body, I buried my feet into black slippers that sat next to my bed and stood. Dressed in white pajamas, I slowly approached the door grabbing at the metallic knob that felt icy cold as if it had been frozen.

Turning the knob gently, each click heightened my fears, making goose bumps rise on every inch of my body until it had been fully turned. Now, slowly and cautiously, I pushed the door open listening to the creaking of the hinges set the eerie mood. Little by little the door opened, my heart now throbbing within my chest, waiting to find what rested on the other side. Fully opened, my eyes found nothing within the hall but the giggles came again, much louder than before.

I stepped out into the hall looking left down at the illuminated end. The only thing in sight was a blue vase resting on a small table holding a bundle of lilies in a variety of different colors. Relieved yet confused, I turned my eyes the opposite direction finding the source of the laughter. My eyes widened as they spotted two little girls standing in the distance, both identical wearing the same white dress with white shoes to match. Both girls had straight, jet black hair that covered their eyes and in their left hand, there was a floating red balloon tied to a thin thread. Their faces held no smile as they blankly starred into my soul. I stood frozen in place consumed by fear feeling hairs on the back of my neck start to rise.

“Want to play, Tommy?” They both smiled in unison delivering that sinister feeling. They waited for a reply that my mouth was unable to spit out as I stood petrified.

“Come play with us, Tommy,” the girls said at once as their smiles widened.

“Come play with us, Tommy.”

“Play with us, Tommy.”

Then the lights of the hall flickered out. Standing in the darkness I wondered what would happen next, though at the same time I didn’t really want to find out. My heart started pounding like a drum I could feel that rattles my chest. Giggling echoed through the hall and then the lights flickered back on silencing the laughter. In front of me, the girls stood but were now a foot closer and the red balloons had disappeared.

“What’s wrong, Tommy? Don’t you want to play with us?”

Then the lights flickered out again. My breathing the only sound within the hall until the giggling echoed again with the lights illuminating seconds later. Now the girls were even closer. On the sleeves of their dresses, my eyes could see a patch of crimson stain the cloth.

“Come play with us.”

Off and on the lights went with the time intervals quickening from each transition. The girl’s laughter continued to surround me and pierce my ears as they pressed forward in my direction. With each move they made, their dresses became more and more stained with red until they were fully painted. The girls were now halfway and as I looked, their hair was pulled back to reveal their eyes that were now burning bright red. On the walls, blood escaped the creases from where the wall and ceiling meet, and started trickling down to the carpet floor. My heart throbbed harder now feeling like it was fixing to explode.

Still the lights flickered.

Off.

On.

Off.

On.

The two identical girls now stood a couple feet away from me. A few more flicks of the light and we would be face-to-face, ready to play.

Off.

On.

The transition from dark to light started to slow but the girls still approached. Next to me, the bedroom door slammed shut, but I showed no emotion as I continued to witness the terror in front of me.

Off.

On.

They were almost close enough to touch now. The walls were painted in blood’s crimson color that had reached the carpet. It was no longer its vibrant brown color, but instead moist with red.

Off.

The lights remained that way for a long period of time. The laughter of the girls had stopped. The only sound was the heavy rhythmic beating of my heart that rang in my ears. Frozen and petrified, I stood waiting knowing that this was not the end of the horror.

1 minute.

2 minutes.

Time had slipped away as the lights kept the hall in complete darkness bringing an eerie feeling that felt all too familiar. Swallowed in blackness, I searched for the red eyes. Those blood red eyes that would soon devour my young soul. Seconds turned to minutes as the search continued, but they didn’t show.

On.

As I looked down the illuminated hall, I could see all the crimson that painted the walls and soaked the carpet had all disappeared along with the two girls that were nowhere in sight. I looked behind me figuring they would be standing there waiting to lunge at me, but there wasn’t anyone there. Sighing with relief, with beads of sweat racing down my face, I was able to freely move from my stationary position. The heavy ringing of my heart had faded as it returned to normal.

I turned to face the closed bedroom door ready to open it and race back into bed and throw the covers over my head as I try to close my eyes. But hands grabbed at my shoulders pulling me towards the ground pinning me in place. Above me, I could see the twin girls hover with sinister smiles revealing razor sharp teeth. A string of saliva fell from their lips as their blood red eyes scanned my body in delight before gazing back into mine.

“Let’s play, Tommy,” the girls said in unison, giggling once more.

Ripping the top of my pajamas open, they clawed at the skin underneath. Their sharp talon-like nails sliced through like they were cutting butter. A loud scream escaped my mouth but it didn’t help as they continued to tear away. Blood poured from out my abdomen revealing its metallic crimson color and the girls hissed and chuckled as they saw it run to the floor. The bitter taste of blood filled my mouth and trickled out the sides and I could feel its warmth race down me cheeks. Not ready to succumb to death, I flung my arms at the girls, swiping and hitting them to make them stop, but life had already seemed to be fading.

I woke up kicking and screaming with my arms punching at the empty air above. I opened my eyes to find myself still lying in bed with my clothes and bed covers drenched in sweat. Heavily breathing, I swiped the remaining beads of perspiration dangling on my forehead while trying to control myself before hyperventilating. I placed my hands over my eyes realizing that it had all been a nightmare.

Then I heard the sound of footsteps running towards my room. They were faint but drawing closer and my attention was now at the crack under the door. The hall light was turned on and fear struck me. The footsteps got closer and closer. But from the heaviness of their sound, I knew it was my mother or father coming to aid me and wonder what had happened. The steps stopped at my door and I waited for one of them to rush in and smolder me in hugs.

The door stayed closed and I waited.

Then came the knock against the wooden door.

Patiently, I waited.

Then in unison I heard them.

“Want to play, Tommy?”
