I walked through the convenience store at a normal pace, acting as casual as possible. The ceiling lights were bright, the tile floor was bright, i felt as if everybody could see me.

I have done this so many times it was almost too easy. The employees didn't suspect a thing.

They never do.

I walk out unsuspecting, it was as if I just didn't find what I was looking for.

I look up at the sky; it’s the color blue right before it is about to go black. My favorite color of the sky. The change was surprising since it was barely sunset when I had walked in the store.

I walk across the parking lot swiftly looking left to right and all around, making sure they didn’t catch me.

I wait for the cross walk signs to let me proceed and I quickly spot Tania in her dark blue hoodie. She was always shorter then me, maybe about a head shorter, dark brown hair and tan skin.

As I walk up to her I see her longing dark brown eyes scan me for food. We haven't really eaten since yesterday morning.

We keep walking a ways, out of the stores sight. Then I pull out the food.

Granola bars and candy bars fall out; they make the least amount of sound when stealing them.

“Can’t wait for the day when I’ll have a real meal again.” she mutters to herself as she grabs a bar and rips it open.

I am about to say something on how she should be lucky she’s eating anything at all, but I actually agree with her.

I begin chomping down on a granola bar, eating it in three bites and going onto the next.

“Should we keep going?” She asks.

“Where?” I ask, curious if she has any ideas for the night.

“Well… I was thinking ‘the wall’”

“The wall…?” I say looking around. “If we’re going we better hurry before all the spots are taken”.

“I know… Its our only option really”

“I know” I say, nodding my head.

We then start to begin our walk to ‘The Wall’. The wall is a place where homeless people can gather and you aren’t harassed or bothered by others, and it’s also nice to have company. Usually a lot of younger people take refuge there.

We have had our fair share of nights at the wall. Sometimes its just safer that way, but you never know who is going to be there and what spot you’re going to get.

We have had a couple of instances,  arguments and fights. Nothing too dramatic, we usually stay out of it.

I’ve almost memorized the streets and buildings in this town. Almost everything looks familiar, so getting to the wall isn’t too difficult.

I recognize the buildings as we turn corners and cross streets quickly.

I then realize we are getting closer. I start to feel a bit nervous, a weird feeling forms at the bottom of my stomach. This place has always made me somewhat nervous, it makes everybody nervous.

But it is still better then sleeping out on the sidewalk in the open.

I look up at the sky and I see the stars so clearly. Something about the night is so calming and humbling to me.

When we round the last corner I see the lights from down the alley. The flashlights.

Tall old brick buildings surround the alley. It’s dirty and musty, but it’s familiar.

Tania and I look at each other and nod our heads. She pulls out her flashlight from her old, black backpack. I pull mine out as well.

We walk up cautiously seeing the people come into view. I notice their curious stares and I start to feel a bit uncomfortable, but I try to realize that these people are just here for refuge like us.

Tania doesn’t seem to mind much and keeps walking a bit more relaxed.

I scour the area for familiar face, walking past homeless families and young children in huddles. There is not much color here, the cement walls are grey, and the concrete ground is grey. This place has a special look to it, which must have attracted people from the start. There are many ledges through the large open space. They look like giant stairs all around and people climb around to get a good spot or they stay on the main level. The main level is very open and many of the newcomers stay here. The higher levels are almost reserved for people who have been here longer and they are usually much older.

As I walk around people and they stare at us with our flashlights, I hear my name called.

“Violet… Is that you?” I hear.

I look over to the left and I see Miranda sitting with a group of kids around our age.

I breathe a sigh of relief and wave my hand.

“Tania, look” I say taking a hold of her arm and I guide her to Miranda and her group.

“Thank god” she says sighing.

“Miranda… It’s been a while,” I say as she gets up.

She moves towards me and gives me a hug.

“Nice to see your faces here” she says smiling her big, wide smile. She hugs Tania next and then gestures towards the group.

“Well, have a seat” she says, “You guys this is Violet and Tania, friends of mine.” She says.

They look up and nod their heads.

“So where have you guys been?” She asks.

I finally get a good look of Miranda, her dirty blonde hair is greasy like the rest of ours, but thick and wavy, she has the same scar on her cheek like she always has had. You can’t miss it when you first meet her, I always wondered what had happened, but she never said a word about it.

“Oh… we’re around, we don’t go to far,” I say.

“Ah I know, I just thought I’d see you more,” she says.

When I first left the orphanage I never imagined I would see so many homeless kids, I didn’t think they existed. I thought they all were in homes like me, you just don’t see them.

“We’ve been trying to find ways to save up to get a train ticket somewhere, but it’s hard to make any money or get any…” She says looking at everybody around her. They all stare at the floor and think to themselves not bothering to look up or speak. “We try to beg on the streets, but we’re all too afraid we’ll get sent back, and I’m not going back”

“We have been thinking about that, I just wouldn’t know where to go…” I say shrugging my shoulders.

“I thought we would just know when we got there, like it would be fate or something.” Miranda says playing with her hair.

A younger boy looks up and catches my eye then looks away.

“Well, I guess today isn’t much of a social day. We are all pretty tired.”

“Yeah, we’ve been walking all day.” I say looking at Tania; she is already lying down with her eyes closed.

Sleep does sound nice at the moment, I usually never have time or I am awoken by the slightest sound. I lie out my thin blanket from my bag and use my backpack as my pillow as usual. I take off my shoes and lay them by my feet. Everybody else starts to go down quickly. The lights start to shut off and the stars become easier to see. The stars are always so pretty here at night. It is as if I can see every constellation, if I knew how to find them. I wish that my school had taught me more about them; I find so much interest in them.

I slowly start to drift off and I take one last look around at everybody else fast asleep.

I then feel my eyes start to close and blackness consumes me.

I jolt awake from a dream that I can’t quite remember. I hold my head in my hand and rub my eyes slowly. I then look over to Tania and find that she is gone.

That is strange.

I look over and find that everybody but the young boy by me is gone. I look around and find that the place looks a little emptier then it did before, I notice that every single person is asleep.

Also strange.

I get up slowly and grab my flashlight.

“Tania?” I whisper. “Tania?”

I grab my shoes and put them on quickly.

I start to walk around flashing my light.

Where did my group go? Did they see something? Did they leave?

No. Not Tania. She wouldn’t leave me without telling me.

I then hear movement from down the alley separate to ‘the wall’. I had never gone down this alley before. It is big and spacious and the walls are grey cement. I peak around the alley and take a few steps in.

“Tania?” I whisper loudly.

I shake my head. Maybe she just went for a walk with them.

Yeah that’s probably it. I have seen Miranda do that before. She says it clears her mind. Tania must have woken up and joined her.

I walk around a bit more and look through the alley of sleeping people flashing my flashlight, nobody wakes up.

I feel a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach. I try to ignore it and I start walk back to my spot. I look in the alley one more time and quietly call Miranda and Tania’s names.

I then decided to keep going, but before I turn around I feel a hand on my back.

I jump and turn my head.

It’s a boy. An older boy. He is smiling ear to ear at me. And before this moment I had never seen a creepier smile in my entire life.

He then pins my arms behind my back pushes me farther into the alley. I scream at the top of my lungs.

“Help! Somebody help me!”

Then I feel a hand on my mouth and my screams are muffled.

“Shut up!” I hear yelled in my ear, and then when they get me behind the corner they slam me into the wall. “Nobody will hear you anyways”

“This one… This one I want” the boy who smiled at me says. Although he isn’t smiling now. His mouth closed and his eyes are bright, piercing red. I am shocked at the sight.

Red eyes? How could it be? It is as if they are glowing.

I am suddenly even more frightened then before. I squirm under their hold, but it doesn’t do much. I don’t know how many there are, but I can barely move a muscle under their strength.

What are they going to do to me?

“He’ll kill you” one of them says to the boy.

“He’ll never know, all of you drink!” He says smiling again.

“How the hell is she awake?” another boy asks in a low voice.

“Maybe she came from outside the area… either way, I don’t care”

I hear no more talking. I all of sudden see him come closer and I feel his breath on my neck, then I feel a sharp pain.

I scream under the hand covering my mouth as I stand there in agony.

The wound burns like acid was thrown onto it. I feel him drink it in huge gulps. Then I feel him ripped off of me and I feel the blood drip down my collarbones and soaking into my shirt. Then another is ripped off of the right side of my body and my hand goes to my wound instantly. Then other is ripped off of me and I slide down the wall onto my knees.

I yell in pain cupping my wound.

Why did he do that? Why did he bite me? Why did he drink my blood? I don’t understand...

I hear commotion and fighting going on around me. My wound starts to not hurt as much as it did before. The burning sensation was replaced by a throbbing ache that was less intense. I heard people grunting and shoes scraping against the ground.

I have to get out of here. I looked up and saw the boy who bit me get stabbed in the chest.

My eyes widened in surprise and I scooted to the side away from the commotion.

I got up slowly and tried to run away but then I felt hands on me and pull me back.

“Let me go!” I screamed thrashing as hard as I could, even though it felt like I was moving through water. Every move was tiresome.

“Get her down” I heard a voice say.

I felt more hands bring me down and cover my mouth with tape.

I tried to scream underneath the tape, but it was muffled like before.

That was it, I was going to die. They were going to kidnap and murder me like in my nightmares.

Through all the chaos I looked at the people who had saved me. They are kids, like me. I look at them puzzled. Why are they doing this to me?

Where is Tania? Miranda?

I am scared.

I see their eyes are glowing red like the others. So they are just like them…

They are monsters just like them. It’s hard to see them other then their eyes, so I can’t make out exactly what they look like.

“What do we do?” The girl says.

“What do you mean? We take her back.” A boy with a low booming voice says coming towards me, I flinch.

“She’s bitten…” The girl says. I feel the blood on my neck; the open wound stinging a bit now. Will I bleed out? Will I die from blood loss?

“I don’t know. I’ve never seen them live this long before.”

“That’s because he didn’t finish”

“Just take her with the others… she’s no different” the boy says shooing me off.

They pick me up roughly, throwing me over their shoulders. I hear scuffling of feet.

I try to scream underneath the tape, but it isn’t effective.

“Wait” I hear someone call.

Then I feel something lift me up then I feel myself get hit over the head and the world turns to black.
