Revival
The very first concert I went to was to see the band called Mindless Self Indulgence. It changed my life. At a good live concert, especially at a rock concert, you feel every emotion in a span of one hour. Before the music starts, there is an eerie dead calm but as minutes tick away you can feel the crowds’ mounting tension. The band walks out and before you can even comprehend what has happened you are thrown and crushed, the ice in a blender. The people in the crowd thrash around and the instrumentals blare and vibrate into the floor. Vibrations move up to your feet and around your whole body. You begin punching and kicking some person, you have never even met. A warped version of Chuck Palahniuk‘s “Fight Club.”
The lead singer croons into the microphone about heartbreak, sex, and society’s hypocrisy. The people in the crowd jump and scream along to every word. You are no different. You do not feel pain, then at least. You are dripping with everyone’s sweat but your own and you can taste the beer that splashed onto your body even though it never touches your mouth. Your heart is pumping so hard that you think it might jump right out of your throat and onto the floor. When you fall down because some two hundred pound man, with hair longer than yours and dripping with sweat, rams right into you millions of hands reach out and pick you back up. Everyone dances to a twenty first century tribal dance. It does not matter who you are or what you have done in life. The person next to you may be a millionaire with a nice car and it does not matter. You are just some kid at a punk rock show. The fact that you end up with a black eye, a couple bruised ribs, and knot on your head the size of Texas does not faze you. You feel more alive than any other time in your life. Without pain, how do we even know that we are alive?
Your breath is getting tight in your chest and you begin to see black spots, however, this does not slow you down. It is a battle between you and everyone who stands in your way of the front row. Of course, when you actually get there the only breathes you can take are when the crowd moves back. They heave themselves forward sucking it right back from you. You are lightheaded which adds to the adrenaline coursing its way through your veins. You look at the band; they look so beautiful, half-naked, screaming their deepest thoughts to a mass of people. You wish that you could scream right up there with them, but screaming from the front row is enough. The lead singer in his moment of glory gets cocky and tests how far he can push the crowd. He must feel like a god. The final song begins and even though everyone’s bodies are screaming, the energy mounts even more than it had in the beginning. There is a chorus of grinding and clicking sounds. Millions of tiny flames shoot into the air and people begin screaming “Encore,” the band complies.
When it is all over, you feel such a loss. Exhaustion sweeps over you but you still have a buzz from the mass of emotions you felt over that single hour. Your eyes feel gritty; all of your eyeliner streaked down your face like little black tears. You talk in a hoarse voice about how amazing the show was. The car ride home starts out very loud but, in no time, everyone is sleeping or looking at all his or her bruises and scrapes. The smell of sweat, blood, cigarettes, and beer would normally be overwhelming enough to make you sick but you are too drained. You wish you could relive that night all over again. Then, another one of your favorite bands comes into town. The one that you thought you would never get tickets to; the band that you have dreamed of seeing. You know that it will not be like any other show you‘ve been to. Already you begin planning your next outfit.
