“Grandma, tell me a bedtime story pretty pretty please!!”

“Alright, but you have to lie down and be quiet until I’m finished with the story.”

“Ok Grandma, I promise.”

“Alright, it was the summer after my senior year; it was a very late night when my friends Jamie, Jackson, and Amber decided they were going to sneak me out of my house to go down to the river. We got a tent and some blankets together because we weren’t going to come home that night. We were going to sleep on the river bank. We walked down past the corner store and went down to the camping area. The boys got our tent put up and we got our blankets situated. Then we decided it was time to go swimming. The water was beautiful; it was go calm it looked like a mirror.  We swam all the way out to the middle of the stream where the current was strongest. It wasn’t that fast, it was perfect. You could just sit there and lazily float for hours on end. We all had a splash fight, until we walked to the bank and collapsed laughing.

That was where your grandfather and I fell in love. It was on that night with just the four of us. When we finally got out of the water it was about 11:30. Jamie and Jackson started a fire while Amber and I got dressed in the tent. Then Amber told me that she had a crush on Jamie, and that made our night much better. She sat next to Jamie and I sat next Jackson. That night was one of the most fun nights of my entire summer. We sat by the fire, talked and laughed until the sun started to come up. That’s when we finally decided to go to bed, Amber and I spelt in the tent, while the boys slept outside. Your grandfather and I started dating that summer and got married about a year later.” She paused for a moment, lost in her own world with her memories.

“What happened to Jamie and Amber?”

“Well their story ended with much sadness. They dated and eventually got married like Jackson and I. Then Jamie and Jackson were drafted in to the army and sent away to Vietnam to fight in the war. Amber waited and waited, but he never sent any letters or ever came home. After about six weeks without a letter from him, she received a notice that informed her that Jamie was killed in battle while saving his entire squad. She was never the same after that. She stopped talking to everyone, even to me. I tried to be there for her, but I was still worried about Jackson because he was still in Vietnam. She was so depressing, always saying that nobody was ever coming home from the war, and I couldn’t handle that mind set of hers. I didn’t know what to do, so I just stopped talking to her. I had cried all my tears for Jamie’s death, but she just couldn’t get over him not being there. She was so in love with him that she couldn’t handle him not being there with her. I still blame myself for her ending her own life; maybe if I had talked to her then she would have regained her will to live. But you can’t change the past, and the two of them are probably together now and very happy. Oh dear, it’s time for you to go to sleep. Goodnight” She hurriedly placed a kiss on her grandson’s face and left the room with tears dripping silently down her face.
