eustace wright, a teenage boy, lives in a cottage in the village of hemslock with his grandmother, little sister clara and a black cat called lucifer. on the night of a great storm, he learns his dead mother was a witch and later discovers that clara has been stolen by witches from his mother’s coven. driven by a sense of guilt that he could have prevented the abduction, he embarks on a quest to rescue her. eustace’s best friend, a witch called autumn, helps him unravel the mysterious world of witchcraft.
on a trip to the seaside town of moorsby to visit his absent father, eustace meets a time-traveller who knew and worked with his mother. he agrees to help him on one condition: that eustace makes a set of twelve wands called the apostles, which are described in the book of revelation. one of these wands will be used to destroy an old book of spells that his mother studied and that contains the darkest magic.
as eustace completes the task of making the wands, he learns the witches are teaching his sister dark magic. he bargains for her return with his mother’s coven ring, which the time-traveller hid after her death. eustace starts to plan a perilous escape from the army of witches that he and clara will inevitably face.

the time and place of the exchange is set and eustace and autumn arrive on the moonlit beach to wait, but things don’t go to plan and in the heat of battle, clara disappears. believing her to be hidden safely in a curious-looking grandfather clock belonging to his mother, eustace makes his own escape. but autumn is cut with a knife that has been cursed and she falls gravely ill. eustace must find one of his apostle wands to save her life, so he travels back in time to look for it.

now back in the present, and some six months later, eustace returns to the scene of the exchange to look for his sister; to his delight the old clock is still there. but he’s been followed by one of the witches from his mother’s coven, who imprisons him. superstitious of killing a wandmaker, the witch instead leaves him to the fate of a half-starved pack of hounds. just in time, eustace is rescued and helped into the sanctuary of the old clock where he is finally reunited with his sister.
