The Key

Write me a tune, give me a melody.
Something quite original, not another parody
Of a three chord trick sang with a lairy northern tongue,
Marry my words with music and give me a song.
*
My words are very lonely and of friends they are bereft,
They want to dance above a busy staff guarded by a treble clef.
My kingdom for a crochet, a minim or semibreve
To give this verse some heart and lungs and hear it start to breathe.
*
Chorus
Rescue us from anonymity and provide us with a key,
An eternity in obscurity is a life without a key,
Left alone on Booksie without melody or a key,
I may even get a royalty if you’d just give me the key.
*
E, A and B7 just wouldn’t be enough,
I want to bridge the verse to chorus with a sultry suspended fourth.
Throw me in a minor, change my mood and make them cry,
Take them to a desolate plain, they’ll need me when they die.
*
Chorus
Rescue us from anonymity and provide us with a key,
An eternity in obscurity is a life without a key,
Left alone on Booksie without melody or a key,
I may even get a royalty if you’d just give me the key.
*
My words may die a death if denied their natural friend,
They stand alone upon the page and try to comprehend
Why no one cares enough to embellish them with lush arpeggios,
Or build a sonic wall of sound with a thunderous dynamic crescendo.
*
Chorus
Rescue us from anonymity and provide us with a key,
An eternity in obscurity is a life without a key,
Left alone on Booksie without melody or a key,
I may even get a royalty if you’d just give me the key.
