I once met a cloud that was always sad and gloomy and would never let the sun shine through...
I asked it why it was always so sad...
The cloud replied "I don't know, I just am."
I then asked "What can I do to cheer you up?"
The cloud replied "There's nothing you can do, "I guess it's just my nature."
I thought to myself that it was in desperate need of a good friend so I decided to stick around and do my best to brighten the days to come for it...

There were times where it's gloomy grayish hue lightened up a little to more of a semi transparent white...
During these times, the sun would penetrate through the cloud making the climate underneath actually quite pleasant...
So I figured if I were to shun it do to its various spells of depression and not at least try to lift its spirits, I would be no better than the circumstances that originally led to its unhappiness...
After some time of living in the cloud's shadow, I began to realize that my skin had grown pale and discolored...
I began to long for the soothing warmth and nourishment of the sun...

One day I looked up and could see the rays of the sun creeping out around the edges of the cloud...
I reached my hand out just enough to escape the shadow of the cloud...
As I felt the warm kiss of the suns rays, a familiar sense of regeneration and comfort surged down my arm...
As I turned and looked over my shoulder, I could see the cloud gazing down at me with a look of sadness at how happy the sun made me...
I felt a rush of emotion wash over me and as I took a deep breath, I stepped forward and out of the shadow of the cloud...
I began to walk, trying my best to not look back but my emotions got the best of me...
"I will always be your friend." I said to the cloud. "But I must do for myself If I am ever to have the strength to do for you."
I turned away and began to walk again...
As I walked away the cloud said "I understand my friend, I will not follow you but if ever you need the shade and nourishment of my friendship it will always be here for you ."
A slight smile came to my face as I continued forward though it pained me to know that I was venturing forward alone...

Time passed and a rich color returned to my skin along with an energy I had long forgotten...
But after some more time, my skin began to peel and I began to get exhausted being exposed to the relentless rays of the sun...
I realized that what I once enjoyed so much had grown to be just as damaging as that which I believed to be so unhealthy for me before...
I now understood that I needed a careful balance of the two because too much of anything can be harmful whether I believe it to be good or bad...
I decided to turn back and return to the old friend I had once left behind...

After many days and nights of traveling, I came upon the clearing where I had once met the cloud...
As I scanned the skies above, I realized there wasn't a cloud in sight...
My heart sank as I realized that the cloud had broken it's promise...
It's shade was not there when I needed it most...
I felt faint and weak and I lacked the strength to move on...
I looked off into the distance desperate for some sort of relief...
I noticed a green patch of life further into the clearing...

I made my way towards it and realized it was a tree and some other plant life...
I approached the tree and asked humbly, "May I take shelter in your shade it is very hot and I am very tired."
The tree replied, "Of course, rest your body and your soul my friend and feel free to drink from the the cup plants at the base of my trunk for they hold bounties of water to replenish you." "Pick one of the many fruits on my branches and quell your hunger, for there are many."
I rested against its trunk and basked in the shade, sipped the water that pooled in the various cup plants it spoke of and I feasted on the many fruits on its branches.
I soon regained my strength and began to share the tale of the cloud I once knew and how upset I was that the cloud was not here upon my return as it had promised...

The tree simply said "Your friend the cloud did not break its promise to you."
I asked "What do you mean?" "It is nowhere to be found!"He replied "Look closely around you young wanderer, your friend the cloud is all around you." "The rain from the cloud you speak of provided the water for me to grow and give you the shade you take shelter under as we speak." The water gathered in the cup plants at your side that have quenched your thirst was also provided by your friend the cloud and the fruits that fill your belly were all thanks to it's contribution." "Without the cloud none of this would be here for you to enjoy." "You see it did not say it would be here, it said if ever you need the shade and nourishment of it's friendship it will always be here for you."I began to speak but held my tongue when I realized the tree was right, the cloud did provide shade and nourishment like it had once promised...I was too busy looking inward and not far enough ahead...I never gave it a fair chance and I left my friends side before I could see how much it really had to offer and despite my selfishness, in the end it still proved to be a true friend and be there for me in my darkest of hours...

The End...
