As Dirk Mason sits on his porch, a car pulls into his driveway. A man gets out and walks to the porch.
"How can I help you?" Dirk asked.
"It's not how you can help me, it's how I can help you. My name is Jack Beckley. I promote prizefights. I have a guy who you'll want to fight."
"No thanks, Mister Beckley. I'm retired.
"Boy, you can't afford to turn this down."
"You must be hard of hearing. I said that I'm retired."
"You can't retire. You're only thirty. I want you to fight Buster Brown."
"Buster Brown? That guy is an animal."
"Yes and he's never been defeated like you. What do you say? Will you fight him?"
"You're stupid. All of those beatings you took dulled your brain."
"You'd better leave or I'll break your legs."
Beckley gets back in his car and drives away. Dirk then goes in his house. Dirk is the kind of guy that can be trusted. His six feet four body and dark black hair make him look menacing but he's really quite nice. The next day Dirk gets a visit from his cousin Scott.
"Hi, Dirk. I've got some great news. I got a visit from Jack beckley. He wants me to fight Buster Brown."
"You're not going to fight him are you?"
"Buster Brown is very seasoned and he's tough. He doesn't care who he hurts just as long as he wins."
"This is my big chance. You can't expect me to just pass it by. I know that I'm not as experienced as you but I can win. I know I can."
"When's the fight?"
"Eight weeks from now. Will you help me train?"
"Can I ask you something?"
"Beckley told me that he asked you to fight Brown first but you declined. Why?"
"You know that I'm retired. It's been three years since I last fought."
Scott's blond hair and dimples makes him look cute to the ladies. He's five feet eleven and he has a bit of body flab. Dirk helps scott train for the bout. Eight weeks pass and fight night arrives. Both contenders stand in the center of the ring as the referee informs them of the rules. When the referee finishes, both contenders return to their corners.
The bell rings and the fight begins. Scott gives a stiff jab to Brown's face and five blows to his body. They move around the ring and Scott continues delivering blows but suddenly Brown goes crazy. He begins pounding Scott over and over again. Scott delivers two more blows to Brown's head. Brown starts delivering hard blows again. Suddenly the bell rings.
"Scott, you have to quit. You can't take this."
"I'm not stopping. I can win. I know I can."
"No you can't. I'm going to throw in the towel."
"No dammit! If I quit, people will think I'm a loser. I'm not quitting."
The bell rings and the two fighters continue fighting. Suddenly Brown begins landing devastating blows again. The referee tries to intervene but Brown kicks him in the crotch. With less than five more blows, Scott falls to the ring. The referee counts to ten. Scott isn't moving at all. Dirk rushes to his side. He feels for a pulse but there isn't one. Scott is dead.
Three days later Dirk gives the eulogy as tears roll down his cheeks.
"Scott was a great man. A great father, a great husband and a great prizefighter. He always put others before himself. He was caring and he will be missed.
After burying his cousin, Dirk returns home. He turns on his television and he's shocked to see Buster Brown being interviewed.
"Mister Brown, many people blame you for Scott Mason's death. How do you respond to that?"
"I don't give a damn! I'm glad that the son of a bitch is dead! He should've known better than to fight me."
"Mister Brown, if you could redo the bout, would you be less brutal?"
"Hell no! That bastard deserved what he got!"
In a fit of rage Dirk throws a boxing trophy at the TV and smashes the screen. Dirk then gets in his car and drives to Buster Brown's house. He storms to the front door where he's greeted by Brown.
"You son of a bitch! I heard what you said about Scott on TV!"
"So, what are you going to do about it?
"I challenge you to a fight."
"Are you insane? You couldn't stand a beating from me. Go home."
"I'm challenging you. Do you accept or are you scared? You don't want to fight me because you're a chicken."
"Nobody talks to me like that. Yes, I accept your challenge and I'm going to bury you just like your cousin."
Brown's shaved head, dark skin and muscular physique are intimidating. At two hundred and forty pounds, he's twenty pounds heavier than Dirk. Dirk trains hard for eight weeks until fight night arrives. Both contenders stand in the center of the ring while the referee informs them of the rules. When the referee finishes, both contenders return to their corners.
