Jenniken's Liberty

A Stand-Alone Short from The Wastelanders Series.

Chapter 1: Before They Fell

Liberty sat playing with her pet "Dragon" (some kind of big lizard) in the ruins of the old park in her neighborhood. Her mom, Jennikens, was lost in thought about the days of old…

Before the war, Jennikens was a professional sales rep, for no particular company. She was freelance. You give her ten percent and she relentlessly sells your product. She wears the formal attire of a stockbroker or bank president and works 9 to 5 like the rest of corporate America. In that world, she is Jennifer or Ms. Diamond.

Jennikens doesn't much like that world but understands she's good at it and there is easy money to be made. Unlike her colleagues, she did not turn in early at night. She got dressed at nine, in all black to be exact. She was a bit of a bad girl and liked to perform home invasions on people she met in the sales world. She would attend their parties to case the places out. Accompanied by her man she would then go back with a mask on and rob them of their valuables and money. Her man was a 6 foot 8 inch, behemoth that played as a defensive tackle on the local high school's varsity football team when he was only in the eighth grade. He helped win two state championships. One night after a loss the coach was really coming down on him hard and Chop snapped and beat him pretty badly. He ended up in juvie until he was 18. He and Jen met at the carwash one day and hit it off immediately. It wasn't long before they fell in love and became a new age, Bonnie and Clyde. She had the targets and he masterminded the capers. She was always the aggressor and he would gather whatever they were stealing. They would leave them tied up in a closet and go back to their home like nothing ever happened.

Then they got caught. Chop took the charge allowing Jen to stay free. They had just learned she was pregnant.

Chapter 2: The Sky is Falling

When the child was born Jen named her Liberty. She was extremely intelligent and started speaking by the time she was six months old. She was walking and potty trained by her first birthday. As Jen cut into the cake, Liberty looked up and said "Mommy, the sky is falling" and points to the air. Jen sees something falling too, in the far distance, and whatever, it was, it was very, very bright. After a bright flash that could have been an explosion, she wrapped up the party and headed in the house. She used her phone to check the news, to discover that China had just bombed Washington D.C. with nuclear missiles. That's how bright the explosion was. She saw it from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She grabbed all the important items she could, food freshwater, clothes, toiletries, medicines, etc ., and took Liberty deep in the basement and into the fallout shelter Chop had built before they got caught. He was a huge conspiracy theorist and predicted this would happen. She hadn't been down here before. She discovered an array of everyday items necessary for survival already in place. The cabinets were stocked with canned goods. There were, generator ran freezers of milk and meat. A whole closet had bottled water and a water purification system for future freshwater. There was furniture, a shower, and a toilet. An artesian well provided the water as generators supplied power. The generators were wired to solar panels and a wind turbine on the outside. There were two back up, energy generating stationary bikes and back up panels in case they needed replacing. Jen did one last trip around the house and sealed her and Liberty in the vault and didn't come out for a year.

The news had reported 14 bomb detonations across America in different major cities. There was a Geiger counter in the shelter that used to constantly tick and click, but it had slowed down then almost came to a stop recently. She would get a little tick every once in a while. She decided to leave. The food was getting low and the baby had to eat.

Chapter 3: A Whole New World

safe haven to find everything pretty much how they left it, except with the absence of color. The radiation and fallout had left everything multiple shades of grey, black, white, and dull browns. It reminded her of the Wizard of Oz in reverse. She left behind, a vibrant colorful world, and while she was away the wicked witch of the East had come and stolen all the color with the world's biggest firework show. She had put a gas mask on Liberty and worn one herself after both had slipped into hazmat suits. The built-in Geiger counter was not ticking. She removed the mask but left Libertys on. Liberty didn't want to remove it anyway, she thought it was cool, so all was well. Jen lead them to the old corner store and rattled the locked door. It took her about thirty seconds to pick it as Liberty watched in amazement. It stunk really bad from the spoiled and decayed food, so she put her mask back on. She hears movement and the patter of small but heavy feet and looks around until she spots what appears to be a rat the size of a poodle, who was extremely irradiated and glowing. She came to the conclusion that the radiation had formed mutations out of things it contacted. Along the way to the store, she had noticed a really weird looking rabbit and a funny-looking bird. Now she realized why they appeared so strange looking. Instead of succumbing to death, they would basically adapt and evolve, gaining size and extra parts on some occasions. She thought about what a bear would look like and gotta goosebump creating shiver.

Liberty was in an old shopping buggy scared to get on the floor until Jen disposed of the rat. Jen shot it twice with a .380 she found in the shelter. She did a quick sweep and found nothing more except two huge spiders she squashed with a bag of charcoal. She pushed Liberty around in that cart salvaging whatever she could find. She ended up filling two carts, tied them together and pushed them home to resolve the problem of how she was going to carry the supplies. A two-headed deer crosses their path 50 yards away. He looks, seems uninterested and continues walking. Liberty was giggling hard at the sight. For the next few days, Jen and Liberty just spent their days walking around and exploring. Several times they had been in danger, but Jen always protected her daughter. She was no slouch in crunch time thanks to her previous life of crime. The biggest creature she had encountered was a four-horned, six-legged bull cow. She found a box of grenades in her travels and easily disposed of him with a well-placed throw. BOOM!... "Ribeyes on-demand," she says to Liberty and laughs until she pee's a little.

Jen awakens to a loud boom and immediately checks on Liberty who slept right through it. They had been up late telling ghost stories and she was "plum tuckered" as Jennifer would say. She goes outside to see if she can see anything. A big circular door had opened out of the dirt and now stood ajar as a line of armor-wearing soldiers poured out of the now gaping hole in the ground. They were heavily armed and began demanding orders to the tribes of savages who had been living off the land since the war, having no shelter to seek and surviving whatever way they had found. They didn't appear to want to comply and some lady yelled through a bullhorn "Stand down or we will open fire!" One of the savages, advances, and gunshots ring out. In less than a minute, the vault dwellers had wiped out the ones causing the trouble. The rest surrendered in fear. She had learned that these people called themselves, The Order, and the lady in charge was ex Myrtle Beach mayor, Brenda Brown. She didn't like her before the bomb, and she wasn't going to start now.

Chapter 3: Its Distro!!!

For almost a year Jen watched from afar as Brenda and her army rebuilt the now named "Murda Beach." They even erected a wall. As Jen looks over the horizon, in the distance she notices a pack of what appear to be motorcycles, trucks, and tanks. When they come to a stop, she takes her binoculars and climbs the water tower. As she looks through the lenses, she sees a group of guys heading in different directions climbing into higher vantage points. One almost chose the tower she was on. She was relieved when he didn't. She didn't want to have to kill anyone if she could help it. The events that would unfold were like watching an old Hollywood blockbuster action thriller where a collective of people with the same purpose, overthrow a corrupt controlling faction of some sort. The guys that climbed into the higher spots had killed all of the wall guards and tower guards in a matter of seconds with silenced sniper rifles. Another group had penetrated the "Everything Proof" gate and eventually overtook the Orders base of operations.

Not long after that was all over, she and Liberty were out walking. The little one had discovered running and was tiring her mom out quickly. She gets away from her heading downhill. As Liberty reaches the bottom she runs into the road and a really cool looking car slammed on brakes to avoid hitting her. A guy hops out as Jens running up and he checks on Liberty. Jen recognizes him as one of the guys who lead the attack that took down The Order. "I'm sorry she ran in front of your car like that. She got away from me." She says with her hands on her knees gasping for air. "She's fast for a little girl." she continues. Distro starts to introduce himself and the woman stops him. "I know who you are. You and your gang are the ones that brought down Brenda. I saw the whole thing play out through my binoculars from the water tower. I thought one of your men was going to climb it. Anyway, I'm not mad about it so, Hi, my name is Jennikens, and this is my daughter, Liberty. She's only three and already a handful."

Nukana loved kids. She had just made a new best friend.

Jennikens told Distro her story as he puffed on a doobie and listened to this chatterbox of a woman vent out some long-held in thoughts and feelings. He then told her about himself, Nukana and the rest of the gang while he bounced Liberty on his knee, letting her pretend his leg was a motorcycle while she imagined herself on an incredible journey with the pack of cool looking guys she had seen from the window the day of the epic battle between The Nuka Gang and the Order. Jen also spoke with the new guy Elvis. They had both been here when the bombs dropped. They shared a few stories and Distro decided to wrap it up. He invited her to come along as well. He couldn't leave that baby out here. It must be hard for a single mom in this world he thought to himself as he extended the invitation. Jen obliged and the six of them headed back home.
