You have created a site and want to be found on search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. Search engine optimization is very important in this particular goal. If you have the wrong keywords targeted, then you will not be found. In order for you to be found, you need to research your keywords. There are basically five steps to effective keyword research. Follow the steps and you will be found in search engines by the consumers you are targeting

One thing you need to understand is that, as the site owner, you do not know how the customer is going to find your site. You do not know which words the customer will type in to find it. You know how you, as the site owner, would find it, but the customer is completely different. In order to know what words the customer types in the search engine to find your site you have to do research. It is a must.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the customer’s mind works differently from yours. While you may think that huge scientific words are what will get your site found in a search engine, your customers will not think the same way. And, you may think that you can use a very popular word such as “Google” as your keyword in order to be found in search engines and, though many customers do type in “google” each day, they are not looking for your site. They are actually looking for Google. Make sure your keyword is related to your site.

Step One: Create a list

Create a list of potential keywords. For effective keyword research you have to sit down and brainstorm. Try to think of all the words and phrases your customers may type into the search engine to find your site. You have to keep your list very broad in order to try to cover the words and phrases that your customers will use.

Step Two: Make the keyword research tool your friend

When search engine optimization first came about, in order to perform effective keyword research you had to physically type in every word on your list into the various search engines and then you had to see what results and how many turned up for each word you typed in. This was a very tedious task. Nowadays there are keyword research tools. They provide very quick and effective keyword research. There are many keyword research tools, for example Google, AdWords Keyword tool, WordTracker and WordStream.

Step Three: Make your list final

You have successfully used the keyword research tool and are now ready to finalize your list. What you should do is create a spreadsheet showing each word and how often it is searched. You need to figure out which terms or words are most viable to your website. List the terms most closely related to the topic of your site. Get rid of all words that are not even remotely related to your site. Create a variety of words to keep.

Step Four: Plan of attack

You have your list of keywords to use. Now you need to use them. You need to work them into your site. Some of the words should already be found on the pages of your site. You need to find a way to smoothly place the other words onto the site pages as well. You should put no more than three or four keywords per page. Use your words appropriately and never make it sound forced.

Step Five: Repeat

Your customers’ needs WILL change and, therefore, your site will need to change. You will need to repeat the entire process and find new keywords to use for your site.

Effective keyword research is a lengthy process but, in the long run, it is well worth it. You will see the number of page views increase, your customer count increase and you will feel more satisfied with your site. Effective keyword research is the key. Keep that in mind as you are trying to find the right keywords for your site.
