The Familiar Ghost

.

Standing at the cliff's edge, surrounded by morning mist, the woman in the long white dress jumps to the jagged rocks below. This happens every year sometime during the first week of October. Living in the old Tennyson Mansion I have witnessed the event several times. A horrible thing to see. There is never a scream after the jump but before….

To set things straight at the start I must acknowledge that it’s true I live in the mansion; I live there as a servant. For thirty years I have served the Tennyson family in a multitude of roles. Driver, gardener and now the overseer of the six live in staff. Cooks and maids. At my age now a part time gardener has been employed for the heavy work.

To the best of my knowledge I am the only one to witness the ghost of Sylvia Tennyson on the estate. Late at night I will hear her screams or soft steps in the hallways. More than once I could hear her weeping. She wants me to hear her, see her. The haunting is for me alone and my tortured mind knows all too well why.

Some twenty years past, Sylvia was to be married to Kenneth Jenkins only to have him call off the wedding the morning of. Devastated Sylvia closed herself in her room for days; coming out only to eat alone in the kitchen.

It was those many years ago that Sylvia came to my room in her wedding gown...to talk. She had been drinking and as she confided her heartbreak to me I did the unthinkable.

Traumatised again she ran to the cliff's edge and threw herself to her death. The matter was well known to be a suicide but the family insisted it an accident. Only I knew the whole reason.

So tonight I will meet Sylvia at the cliff. Jump with her and hope that will end the torment. Deep inside I fear it will only be the beginning.  eNd
