When it rains the force of water from California’s desert storms deposits rocks in small hills next to where is a second class gunners mate riding his horse-- his surname is Cable. We call him the Caballero for his riding a bay gelding broomtail almost all of his spare time, when one day in the hot afternoon while being ridden by Cable in a deep crevasse his Cayuse’s intestines fall out. Apparently as a colt he had not been gelded properly. After a company funeral procession I skin the horse’s rump, salt and dry and store the skin and broom tail in my locker, thinking some day maybe it can be used for a civilian show and tell. (We sailors stationed at USNAD Concord have no locker inspections like in boot camp, and when it comes to teaching nothing should be wasted.)
