Excerpt from. 'Visitors to Pre-Columbian America".

Hundreds of Phoenician inscriptions have been found cut in stone tablets along the banks of rivers in the jungles of Brazil and on the eastern coast of South America, and even more hundreds have been found in North America.

The Phoenician influence is especially evident among the Maya. The Maya of all native peoples of the New World were fully literate. Their script was well-developed .The early art of the Olmecs, beautiful in its utter simplicity. This art might be associated with the oldest writing in Mesoamerica.
