So I'm a complete sucker for books that have amazing front covers....and I know everyone always says 'dont judge a book by its cover' etc but I basically picked this book because of the
amazingly shinny front cover. But I am sooooooooooo glad that I did. It has literally flunge right to the top of my list of favourite books. Currently ahead of Twilight, Harry Potter and The Hunger
Games....which is crazy! I literally read this book in almost one night it was that amazing, I love books which I want to stop my life to read and this was definitely one of them. My life was on
hold for two days while I got sucked into the world of Tris and dystopian chicago.
So basically, the story begins following a 16 year old girl called Beatrice, who lives in a dystopia Chicago where so much war has taken place that the city has broken off into 5 groups
of people called 'Factions' depending on their traits and why they thought the war happened. So for example, Beatrice is part of a group called 'Abnegation' and everyone in this faction believes
that the war started because people were selfish and cruel to each other. So they believe in being selfless all the time. They live their lives being completely selfless from their clothes, which
are plain overalls to their food which is bland, flat and un-indulgent. Furthermore, there are 4 more factions, Dauntless = the brave, Amity = the peaceful, Candor = the honest and Erudite = the
So Tris has grown up in Abnegation, but has always felt like she didn't quite belong there, and selflessness did not come naturally to her. But when a person turns 16 years old they have the
opportunity to change factions to one that is better suited to them or stay with there family in their original faction. Factions are considered more than just groups of people and the society
counts 'Factions before blood' meaning that there at most loyalty is to the faction alone. Just before the 16 year olds' choose their faction, they have a test which
basically analyses their brain cells to which faction they would be better suited in. But when Tris has the test it concludes that she was Divergent, which means she is suited to not only
one but three factions. But in the book it is incredibly dangerous to be divergent and the Government do not like people being divergent and she has to keep this quiet from everyone. So during the
book it takes you through the characters choice of whether to betray their families or live a lie and then the harsh initiations that the 16 year olds have to go through in order to fully make it
in to the factions, and not become factionless.
SPOILER ALERT - If you intend to read this book, do NOT read any further, I do not want to spoil it for you.....
So WOW this book was amazing. The main character of Tris, I first thought she was a young, frail, quite shy character and I didn't feel like she was much of an impact, but when she decides to
change faction to Dauntless, she became much more interesting and got some fire in her personality. The actual initation to dauntless was very disturbing and I began to really dislike them, and
during the book it makes you feel like you think Tris has made a huge mistake and she would have been safer in Abnegation, where she would not have to fight and be put through almost complete
torture. But surprisingly, Tris never feels like this which reasures you. She then meets Tobias, who at first you think is a harsh, unemotional person but when Tris and him start become closer, hes
personality explodes and he is by far my favourite character. I think its the way he cares for Tris that makes him so amazing, Other miner characters such as Peter who I literally wanted to kill
myself and then Christina who grew on me as I read on and she lost some of her 'Candorness'.
The Plot was amazing, it was literally impossible for me to put down. It was gripping, exciting and terrifying all at the same time. Tris's decision of Dauntless was a surprise as she first came
across as a frail and almost boring character, but the world of the dauntless was exciting and disturbing that leaves you wondering about the other factions. The Book is easy to follow and the
ending is never given away and comes as a complete shock. The idea of this dystopian world is really interesting and amazingly thought out. I would have liked to have heard more about the other
factions, as the only two that go into proper detail was dauntless and abnegation. I would have loved to have heard more about Amity, but I have a feeling that might be coming in the second book of
I honestly enjoyed this book so much, the government situation is very like the ones in The maze runner and The hunger games, but I love this sort of book about the government controlling society.
This is definiately a must read. I don't want to give much away in case people are still reading on. But the love between Tris and Tobias and Tobias' indepth story line made this book for
me. The idea behind this book is amazing and I would encourage anyone to read this book.
*****/5 - AMAZING! Could not put down until I had finished it!
