This is a poem I wrote for my English class in eighth grade. We had just finished the Diary of Anne Frank and I will admit i was very saddened by the book. This piece touches not only on the Holocaust, but more so genocide and hatred as a whole and its deadly tie in to human nature.

World in conflict, crisis afoot!

City on fire! City on fire!

Pristine soldier, gleaming figure,

Raising his master’s goal higher.

Senseless hate in innocent streets,

The doom approaching is near.

Shots go off; you’ve let it begin,

Confirming all our fear.

Nations consumed in hellish fire,

Dictators pressing onward.

Those aside stay aside,

For fear of demise unheard.

Few stand up to answer the call,

The silenced screams of others.

Of those oppressed, of those opposed,

Of children torn from mothers.

So in the end, the fight is done.

Victory for the righteous!

But how can we all celebrate,

When tragedy remains among us?

For although terror defeated,

Evil trampled from the land,

Some still suffer loss, heinous grief,

For all, not just one man.

This beast, this demon,

Abomination within us!

Leave our bodies! Leave our minds!

Leave our very spirits!

It leaves us not, for in the middle,

Atrocities accompany man.

And so long as it is, that we exist,

The demons within will stalk again.
