Born on May 23, 1707, in the small town of Stenbrohult Carl Linnaeus was a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist. He laid the foundations for the modern biological naming scheme of binomial nomenclature. He is known as the father of modern taxonomy, and is also considered one of the fathers of modern ecology. Many of his writings were in Latin. Receiving most of his higher education at Uppsala University, Linnaeus grew fond of plants and started giving lectures on botany in 1730. In 1740 after returning from a trip to the Netherlands Linnaeus became the professor of medicine and botany at Uppsala. In the 1740s, he was sent on several journeys throughout Sweden to find and classify plants and animals. In the 1750s and '60s, he continued to collect and classify animals, plants, and minerals, and published several volumes. At the time of his death, he was one of the most acclaimed scientists in Europe. Just recently American news agency Time named Linnaeus the 31st most influential person in human history and the 5th most influential scientist.

Carl Linnaeus created his final draft of his Classification System in 1735 and it was fully accepted by the 19th century. While his original system has been reverted and updated, his original idea is still the framework for our modern system today.
