ice creams on the beach;

being pushed on swings in the park;

and riding bicycles down to the lagoon;

suddenly turned into hiding when you did appear -

we seldom had to hide.

instead of the sweet alias’s given to the other fathers like ‘papa bear’, we started

calling you the absentee dad.

abandonment;

neglect.

suddenly i have no one to hurt the boys who hurt me;

no one to play-fight with;

no one to ride bicycles down to the lagoon with.

we feared your approach,

for whenever you did come near us,

absentee dad;

you were angry -

alas, we seldom had to fear.
