Zero and Ichiru are 9 years old.

Zero peered down at his twin. “’Chiru,” he called from his perch in the tree. “Come on up here!”

Ichiru glanced at him, cherub face set in a stubborn frown. “You know I’m not allowed. You’ll just get into trouble again.”

“So?” Zero growled. “It’s no fun without you here.”

The other Kiriyuu boy sniffled, rubbing his nose. “Mom and Dad… They’d both be much better off without me. Even you, Zero-nii, you would feel the same.” His voice was low as he turned to leave the orchard.

Zero thought for a moment, his brows furrowed. Then he clambered down unsteadily to land beside his brother. “Now you lissena me carefully, ‘Chiru, listen very carefully. What are we?”

Ichiru looked up. “Huh?”

The silver-haired trainee hunter sighed. “We’re family, aren’t we?” Ichiru nodded tearfully, the beginning of a smile visible on his round face. “Well, a family is always together, wherever they are. Deep inside their hearts, they’re linked by the red strand of love. I won’t ever leave you, ok?”

His twin nodded again, openly grinning. “I won’t ever leave you ‘cause I love you, Zero-nii!”

“I love you too, ‘Chiru, I love you a lot.”

The day Shizuka comes to the village.

Under the pink mist of the sakura blossom, Zero watched in a strange fury as Ichiru helped ‘that woman’ to her feet. His hand shook with his hidden sadness, mirrored in his violet eyes. He pressed his hand against the wound on his neck, the place where ‘that woman’ had…

“Damn you, Ichiru!” Zero forced out. “You promised me that day, you promised… You…” The teenager buried his head in his arms, whimpering with sorrow. He could smell the blood that coated the village green, the blood of his parents and the entire village. It stained his clothes and his face, mingling freely with his own and his tears as he bit his lip. Gritting his teeth, he cursed his brother whom he loved more than life itself.
