Suffering in Silence

Short Story by: RoseQuartz44

Summary

This is a sad, romantic story I wrote. I don't know where I got the idea. Honestly, I didn't even start with an idea, it just evolved on it's own. This story is depressing but very romantic and cute. Please give me feedback!!

The sharp sound of his shoes echoed softly through the tunnel. He did not know what had caused the nightmare that had woke him up, all he knew was he had to taste the night air to calm his nerves.  When he reached the end of the tunnel, the park came into view. The playground looked eerie and almost poetically dismal as it hid in the shadows of the trees. He had never seen a night like this. Stars hung like white Christmas lights in the black sky. He shuddered as the night air seeped under his skin.  He lit his cigarette and zipped up his jacked as high as it would go. Not even the cold could make him go back. He began walking faster, the trees turning into dark black blurs beside him as he ran. His body moved mechanically up the hill and towards the bridge. It was his favourite place. His haven. He began to run faster before he reached his destination. His torso slammed into the cold and hard railing of the bridge. He gripped the railing with both hands, the cold metal bar stinging his soft palms. He broke out into cold empty sobs as he heaved himself over the railing. He sat there for awhile, his head in his hands. Wet tears streaked his pale face, making him colder than he had been before. As his sobs subsided, the night was once again silent. No crickets, no owls, only the sound of his heavy, wounded breathing. He had thought it was over, that he could simply force himself to forget the memory that was burned to the inside of his eyelids. He could still hear her screams in his sleep. He could see her blood-soaked body in his arms and feel the warmth and life from her body slip away. He told himself he could forget what had happened, that he would continue life without her. Could there be life without her? He began to lift himself from his seated position on the rail. Within a matter of seconds, he stood with his arms spread wide. He closed his eyes and took one last breath. The last one he could bear without her by his side.
