NURSING HOME

Butterflies

they are dancing

within me

the first ever

butterflies

with wings of lead...

That day is here

again

to lay my eyes

on a woman

that I love

Mother...

her face lights up

like a christmas tree

her eyes rejoice

because of me...

I take her hands

gently hold them

how I wish

we could go back

and start again

I can't take care of her

if only I could

I can make her laugh

I can make her smile

I thank God she doesn't realise

she hasn't been home

in quite a while...

Where did that other woman go?

the lady of anger and wrath?

now she is smaller

but not a shell

to forgive is not to forget

to give helps heal my bereft

and even if not

she is Mamma

I'm sorry...I'm sad

for her it's not that bad...

when it's time to say goodbye

they sting

those tears

in my eyes.
