Motivational Letter for Scholarship 2016 – Ross Scott

In the words of John Keating – “No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world “. My name is Ross Scott; I am a 17 year old boy from a small town in Kwa-Zulu Natal called Ballito. I attend Crawford College North Coast and I am in my matric year.

I could probably start this essay with a thousand reasons on why you should give me this bursary to study at Varsity College but the most important one is that I do not see myself doing anything else for the rest of my life. Teaching is something that has always interested me , from a young age I have always looked at my teachers in awe and admiration , their jobs are so important because you are nurturing young minds into minds that are full of knowledge and understanding. My dream one day is to change the way students see teachers and school all together. How do I plan on achieving this you ask? By making learning fun and proactive and ensuring that the students I teach are absolutely intrigued by the subject. My ways of teaching will be unique; I always find that the teachers who sit behind their desks and just read from a poetry booklet or from a novel are the ones that are not passionate about their profession and the young minds they are teaching. I want to take the students on an adventure, one where they are behind me every step of the way and one where they learn from every single opportunity I have to teach them.

My parents got divorced when I was just 7 years old and I live with my mother who supports me in everything that I do , my father lives In Durban and I only see him 4 days a month. He is my financial support and I am so grateful that I have had the opportunity to attend a private school. My entire life I have been the mediator between my mother and father as they can barely say a word to each other without getting into a heated argument and the stress it has caused me is unbelievable, no child should go through that, that is why if I was fortunate enough to receive this bursary and achieve my dream of becoming a teacher then I could relate to almost every situation that a student could be facing, whether it be at home or at school or personal. Not only would I be a teacher, I see myself being someone that the students can talk to and share their problems with because a student who is unhappy or stressed is a student that will not perform well at school.

I also see myself getting involved in the sports department at the school I teach at because exercise is an integral part of the learning process, we all know the quote – “healthy body, healthy mind “right? In my high school years, I have led by example and captained 3 first teams respectively. I believe that, no matter what the result or no matter what the outcome, as long as the player has given their all then that is enough and in teaching I would like to believe that the same rule applies.

Sometimes change is what is needed and I believe that if I were to become a teacher then you would definitely see the change.

Finally, in the words of William Arthur Ward – ““The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”

Thank You

Yours sincerely , Ross Scott
