Five Years Earlier

“Hello, I’m Dr Matthews. What seems to be the problem?”

The patient looked up. He was slender but tall, looked like a sprinter. Rather handsome, thick, dark hair, bright and friendly eyes and a smile that was incredibly infectious. I grinned.

Come on, Sarah. You are a professional. You can’t think that way.

“Hey, Doc. I’m Rhys, and I think I’m dead.”

I smiled “Let me guess, the next line will have something to do with me being an angel?”

His laugh was childlike but amazing. “You get me already. We must have dinner.”

I found myself grinning despite myself “First let’s check that you’re ok then we can discuss dinner.”

“Awesome, I am just here for a medicine review.”

“For Asthma inhalers, correct?”

“Yep, they help me breathe, so sign me up for more, Doc.”

“Not so fast. We have a whole list of things to talk about first.”

“Damn.” He sulked well naturedly.

20 Minutes Later

I can’t believe I am about to give my number to a patient I just met.

“Ok, we sat through the bureaucratic nonsense; you must now give me your number.” He smiled.

“I did agree, didn’t I?”

“That you did.”

“Ok, fine. Here it is. I expect you to call me.”

“Oh, I will doc.” He smiled.

I felt my knees go weak.

He walked out of the room and when he did, I let out a breath that I didn’t realise that I had been holding.

Well, this is going to be interesting.

The Next Day

I’m at home enjoying my day off, watching an old episode of Diagnosis Murder when the phone rings. My heart catches in my throat. Could it be Rhys?

“Hey, doc. It’s Rhys.”

I smiled “Hey Rhys. How’s it going?”

“How’s it going?” Sarah you are better than this

“Good, better now. So dinner tonight?”

“That’s fast.”

“I figure I busy woman like you appreciates people getting to the point.”

“Dinner sounds great.”

“I will pick you up around 7pm?”

“Great, can’t wait. Bye”

I danced for 5 minutes before settling down again to watch TV. I couldn’t stop grinning.

3 Years Earlier

Rhys and I have been together for 2 years and we couldn’t be happier. I met his brother and he was nice but he seemed a bit odd to both of us, a little dismissive. We are moving in together next week.

“Are you really going to need all of this when we move in together?” I shouted into the next room.

“Which part? The awesomeness or the other awesomeness?” I heard shouted back

We are currently packing his apartment to be ready for next week but Rhys is rather reluctant to get rid of anything.

I roll my eyes “You are going to become one of those hoarders of you’re not careful.”

“They are my video games, movies, books and posters not rubbish and dead animals.” He responded as he walked in the room.

“You’re right.”

Rhys stopped “What did you say?”

“You’re right.” I sighed. I know what is coming next.

“I AM RIGHT!!!! I WON AN ARGUMENT!!! YEAH!!!” He started dancing

I start laughing and couldn’t stop. We end up laughing together like children.

“I love you” We said at the same time.

“JINX!” He shouts quickly.

He continues dancing.

I’M GETTING MARRIED TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I looked at myself in the mirror and grinned.

Rhys and I are getting married today. His brother has been a bit weird this whole time. I was walking towards the bridal changing room when I heard Rhys and his brother arguing about something before his brother stormed off saying “YOU’RE NOT MY BROTHER!”

Rhys had told me back when we first started dating that his brother has schizophrenia but has been doing very well and had been declared well enough to come to the wedding.

I can’t think of this stuff anymore because I’M GETTING MARRIED!

5 Hours Later

Phew, that was a long day but I’M MARRIED!!

My husband (whoa that’s weird to say) and I left the reception heading back to our room at the hotel. We spot Rhys’ brother up ahead and wave, as he turned towards us I notice a glint in his hand. Before I can work out what it is Rhys steps in front of me.

“Don’t move or talk.”

“Why?” I’m starting to panic when I hear him speak because I have never heard him sound like that before.

“He has a gun.” He turned back to his brother.

He puts on a smile “Hey Bro, how’s it going?”

“We are not brothers. My brother is dead. You just look like him!” He cries brandishing the gun.

“I am your brother.”

“No, she killed my brother and you took his place, fooling everybody but me.”

“I’m still alive, I am your brother.”

“No, you’re not.” He raised the gun.

Rhys quickly bats the gun away and his brother drops it.

They start to fight, with kicks and punches flying I try to back away to go get help.

They both look towards the gun and then at each other.

Its closer to his brother than Rhys.

“Please, don’t!”

“No.” He reached for the gun. “I’m going to do it. She killed my brother. I get to kill her.”

I look into Rhys’ eyes. He looked past me.

I turned.

There were armed police behind me.

I was saved.

I fell to the floor and realised that my cheeks were wet, Rhys came over and held me.

“I promise things like this will never happen again.”

I saw the determination in his eyes.

“I know, Thank you.”
