Chapter Two:

The Codex (The beginning)

Doctor Wemmel starts shouting of excitement. “There they go! Look at them go! For the next six months they will be on their way towards Nexa-Graum. And they will send us the information we need for our mission.” Rhett suddenly walks out of the control room.” Are you okay Rhett?” Dr. Wemmel asks. “Well, I hope it’s all going to be worth it in the end. We cannot lose six months for nothing. We’ve calculated before that in this rate we would have around five more years on Earth before it’s all over.” Wemmel reaches for his arm and says; “calm down Rhett, these probes are made for this. Even if the planet seems to be unstable for us, at least we tried our best to get away from here and start all over again on another planet. And this time we won’t pollute and destroy the planet like we did before.” Rhett drops his head. “This has all been our fault. Why is the human race so greedy for its resources?” Suddenly Jensen walks towards Rhett and looks him straight in the eyes. “You know we did everything to survive as the humans race right Rhett? We’ve accomplished so much in the last decades. We’ve went to the moon, we developed medicines to fight illness!” “Well, I have to disagree on that one Jensen” Rhett says. “Then why are we still fighting each other on this planet for land and money? The only thing that made me believe this mission could work and would work for later generations to come is because we set aside our differences and worked together. No matter where we came from or who we are.” Wemmel pets Rhett on the back. “You know Rhett this is why I like working with you. But sometimes it’s not about what has happened. But it’s what’s to come in the future. This is our time to look back at what we’ve done and make it right.” Rhett looks back up. “Yes, that’s right Wemmel. For now it’s just time to look at the probes go, and hope for the best. We need to get ourselves to the communication center as soon as possible. Within the next week we need to keep a close eye on them. After that, we basically can’t adjust anything but its course.” “Well then we’d better hurry” Jensen says. “I’ll get the car. I’ll see you at the entrance of this facility.” Rhett goes to his cabin and packs some clothes and papers into his suitcase. “This should be enough to last me through the week” he says. He then walks to his desk and picks up a family photo and stares at it. “If you only knew what I’m going through to get this show on the road. I hope it’s not for nothing”. “Rhett! Rhett? Are you coming my loyal companion?” “Yes Dr. Wemmel I’m coming. I’m just packing the last important stuff.” Wemmel storms in the room. “Don’t let me grab you by the arm one more time Rhett.” Rhett starts to laugh. “Now then, let us get to the car before Jensen leaves without us. It’s a long way to go so I’d rather not do it by foot. I’m getting to old for this.” Moments later they arrive at the entrance where Jensen is waiting. “Finally guys! What were you doing back there? Having a tea party?” Rhett and Wemmel get in the car. “Don’t mind that Jensen, and if we did, it would have been very intimate anyway.” Jensen bursts out in laughter. “O Rhett, and you say I’m the crazy scientist?” Wemmel nods. “Well, let us go men. We have a long way to go to the communication room.” Several hours later they arrive at the facility. The guards stop them from entering the building. “Identify yourselves please”. Jensen gets his card and hands it over to the guard. “We’re three scientists from the control room facility.” The guard looks at his card and back to Jensen. “Who are those two in back sir?” “O these two love birds? This is Dr. Wemmel and Rhett. They are working with my on the Codex program.” The guard takes a look in the back of the car. “Well then gentlemen, welcome to SX-55”. The gate starts to open and Jensen waves at the guard. “Thank you sir he says while he nods his head.” Wemmel gets in the front of the car. “Well then, now that we are in. Where do we go from here?” Jensen looks in his rearview mirror. “Rhett, you know where to go right?” Rhett takes a map out of his pocket and takes a look. “It’s so incredible huge here” Rhett says. Wemmel moves to the back of the car and snatches the paper out of Rhett’s hands. “Give me that, we need to be there before the seven days are over Rhett.” Rhett spots a guard walking around. “Let’s ask him!” They drive towards the guard and Jensen opens his window. “Can I help you fine gentlemen?” Jensen frowns his eyebrows and starts yelling at the guard. “Fine gentlemen? We’re in a rush to get to the communication room for our probes we’ve been working on for the last ten years!” “I’m sorry sir, but I have to ask you to calm down”. “No can do sir, we really need to go, and you’re going to tell us where we need to go.” The guard opens the door of the car. “Please step out sir.” Rhett and Wemmel are nervous of what is going to happen next. Jensen gets out of the car. “Walk with me sir”. Jensen gets grabbed by his arm and gets dragged inside the building. Rhett looks at Wemmel and says, “See Wemmel? That’s how I feel every time you do that to me!” Wemmel starts shaking his head. “I only do that when I’m positive about something Rhett, not when I’m angry. And we’d better get out of this car and follow him before something bad happens.” A couple of minutes later they found Jensen inside a room with the guard. Wemmel opens the door and walks to Jensen. “What’s the problem Jensen? Why did you get so rushed up all of a sudden?” Jensen looks at Wemmel and says; “Do I look like a fine gentleman to you Wemmel? We have better things to do than joke around!” Rhett walks to Wemmel and starts whispering in his ear. “I’ve found the room, let’s get Jensen and make a run for it.” Wemmel looks at Jensen with a grin on his face. He then takes Jensen by his arm and drags him out of the room while they run. “This way!” Rhett yells. When they get around the corner they suddenly stop. It’s Commander Larson. Commander Larson stands in front of the three guys. “Hello there. I’ve been expecting to see you a little earlier, and under different circumstances”. Wemmel starts laughing anxious. “These are my colleagues Jensen and Rhett. We’ve been working fo..” “I know who you are gentlemen” the Commander says. “Let’s not waste any more time and get to the communication room. I’ll walk you to your rooms first so you can unpack your suitcases.” Rhett suddenly yells, “The car!” Jensen looks back at Rhett and says; “are you telling me you’ve left the car where we stopped?” Wemmel looks down at the floor and says; “Commander, is there any way our suitcases could be handed over to us?” Rhett starts to laugh and grabs his arm. “Wemmel here is getting a little bit too old for this.” The Commander laughs and calls a guard. “I request the car these gentlemen came in back here”. Wemmel looks at Rhett and says; “I wish I had one of those!” A few hours later the scientists get their suitcases. “Why did it take so long?” Rhett asks. “They investigated the car. They wanted to make sure it was completely safe to turn on the car before it would explode or anything.”  The Commander looks at Jensen from the corner of his eyes. “Let’s get moving gentlemen, follow me towards the communication room.” After a long walk they finally enter the communication room. “Those three desks over there are yours to work at. You will have full control of the probes from here for the upcoming week. After that any adjustments made will go through me.” Wemmel runs at his desk and starts looking at the monitors. “Would you look at that! They are already so far away from us, and they did not even reach their maximum speed yet!” Rhett walks towards Wemmel. “See Rhett? Isn’t it beautiful to see something you’ve worked on for so long fulfilling its job?” “It sure is Wemmel. I can’t wait to see the data it will soon send.” Jensen also joins at the desk. “Well, we can scan the space around the probes from here if we’d like to. Maybe we find something interesting on the way there.” Wemmel nods his head and turns on the scanning sequence of Nexa. Wemmel begins to smile. “Look, its sending data already. Nothing special yet, but at least it is working for now.” Rhett activates Graum’s sequence. “Graum is also sending data Wemmel!” “Perfect! I can’t wait what we will see the coming days, weeks and months!” Jensen looks at the monitor of Graum and spots something out of the ordinary. “Look Rhett, Graum is sending some weird information back to us. It looks like straight lines it’s picking up from the location where the planet is.” Rhett takes a look at the data. “Strange, we’ve just send out our probes and just now we receive this data?” Jensen looks at Wemmel and says; “maybe something or someone knows we’re coming for them.” Wemmel looks at Jensen and shakes his head. “That’s impossible! they just launched a couple of hours ago. The signal would take too long to arrive that fast to respond to any launch.” “Then what could it be?” Rhett asks. “Maybe the signal is wrong. It could be an error in the Codex. Do we have any option to reset the Codex inside Graum from here?” Wemmel nods his head. “We sure do Rhett, I can start it but I will need to ask the Commander first.” Jensen rushes out of the room to get the Commander. Several minutes later they arrive back in the room. “What seems to be the problem men?” Rhett points at the data sheet from Graum. “We’re receiving data send to us from another region is space. It’s unknown where it is from exactly but it’s coming from the direction of the exo-planet we’re heading towards.” The Commander looks shocked. “So you mean something or someone is sending a signal towards us? But what could this signal be?” Wemmel looks at the Commander and says; “I think there is something wrong with the Codex sir, if there is any signal from another planet it would have been traveling towards us long before we’ve send the probes. The planet is 650 light years away. It would take years and years to get to us.” The Commander looks at Rhett and asks; “what do you think Rhett?” Rhett stands up from the desk. “We need to reset the Codex in order to see if it is any hardware failure. And if it keeps picking up the signal, we might be in for more than just a ride towards this planet.” Wemmel looks at Jensen and starts to smile. “We are going to need your permission sir if we want to reset the Codex.” The Commander looks at Rhett and nods his head. “Reset the Codex gentlemen, we need to be sure everything is working correctly before we do something we can’t reverse later on”. Rhett starts the reset sequence and Graum resets its Codex within minutes. A couple of hours later Wemmel starts shouting. Jensen and Rhett rush towards Wemmel. “This cannot be” Wemmel says. “The signal is still there, and it is even stronger than before! What could this be?” Rhett looks at the radar. “It seems that Graum is the only one picking up the signal. Nexa is not showing anything in the data charts.” Jensen begins to panic. “Maybe the Codex is having problems. Maybe we need to reset it again, and again, and again!” Wemmel starts shaking his head. “No Jensen, I don’t think that would work in any way. The probe will just do the same sequence over and over again. It might even hurt its program. And we can’t afford to lose Graum already. It would take years and years of building and preparation to get another probe out there and we’re running out of time. All we can do is wait and see what happens in the next couple of days. If the signal keeps showing up, it might be that Graum is experiencing problems or the signal it is receiving is something we might want to take a look at. Also, keep an eye out on Nexa. If she’s showing the same problem later down the road, this cannot be coincidence. I think someone or something is trying to reach out.” Rhett takes Wemmel by his arm and says; “if it’s something that wants to communicate with us who would it be? Our planet is as good as gone!” Wemmel looks Jensen in the eyes and whispers to himself: “The same thing why we are reaching out..”
