the waxen figure lies dormant

in its final resting place

of wood, satin and bronze.

shrunken in death

the face resembles a mask

its unnatural colouring

testimony to death.

hands clasped in beads of prayer

as if time would allow

such penitent outpourings.

people gather round to marvel

at the waxwork image

who replaced the loved one.

astonished by the likeness

astounded by the peacefulness

the shell lies as if asleep

unaware of the attention

an unseeing, unhearing husk

containing nothing except

organs and veins

which lie expectantly

waiting to rot.
