Chapter One: Dr. Daniel Glass, Sr. sits in his elegant office high above Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC, (The year in which the novel is set is revealed later.) His son, Dan Jr., enters wearing wrinkled scrub clothes that his father criticizes. A hostile exchange follows in response to a request from Dan. After Dan leaves, Daniel fantases about his daughter-in-law result in intense physical and psychic pain.
