Shiver Down Your Spine - Sounds of the Night

Shivers down the spine. Loud music in the background that you can just here a bit of a bass beat from a long way away. The sound of a keyboard clicking in an irregular rhythm. Cars racing way too fast along the main road. All night long. Keeping people who aren't used to it awake. But for those of us who are used to it, it's the sound of the night. The cars, the crickets, the sirens, the parties.
The gentle murmur of voices, the cheering of drunks, the sound of a ridiculous v8 engine with a beer-can exhaust. The sound of a dog barking, cars screeching, probably doing burn outs in the Coles car park. The rustle of the leaves on the window which sound like somebody tapping lightly. Inviting you for a peaceful midnight stroll. In your head your imagination starts to wind like the start of an old movie. Somebody is tapping, somebody you love, who wants to have a romantic midnight stroll. But you know it will never happen. It's just one of those teenage loves. Now you've already snapped out of your fantasy and back into reality, but you quickly catch up again. They stop tapping and you hear what sounds like a cat, but you know who it really is. You're out of it again, because you know it actually is a cat, it must be Ginger Pickles, but you try to ignore it and keep dreaming. You quietly slide the window open and climb out, making as little noise as possible. You hop down off the window sill and they're standing there, looking at you. You look back. You start to shiver. They take off their jacket, now their chest is bare, they are freezing, but they give it to you anyway, and wrap it around you. They close a warm hand around yours. You can feel them shivering. You snap out again, because you hear somebody next door whooping at something or other. You are quite cold. Your mum has just closed the door, you notice an extra blanket on you. You close your eyes again and open them in fantasy land. You're down near the water now. Your left hand is nice and warm from being clasped tightly, but your other hand is as cold as their whole body must be. You motion to sit down under a weeping willow by the calm water. You can still hear that race car. No, damn it, go back to your other world. He's arms around you now. You lean over and kiss him. BANG! You fall out of bed. Maybe you should just call them trees.
