This was Hell, it was, it had to be. My arms were numb from hanging above me, my bare feet were freezing, my teeth throbbed. My throat was on fire and hunger gnawed at my insides. Unconsciously, I twisted in my bindings as the hunger surged again, sobbing. I wished my maker were here. I wished so hard that I’d hallucinated escape so many times. I’d given up hope by now. Now my only thoughts were Please, please, just let me sleep…

But that wasn’t to be. Those ones who’d caught me said they were ‘punishing’ me for being ‘a creature that was against God’s will’ and hardly ever let me sleep. When I would finally drift into dreaming, they would pour cold water all over me to keep me awake or they’d cut one of their hands just to watch me beg for the blood. I was too weak now to even manage that.

After a month of starving, my sight had become so dimmed that I could hardly see anything anymore. I knew the men always came around sometime in the middle of the day, yet they never did anything but stand there, letting their heart beats do all the torture for them. They were there now. This was driving me mad! I couldn’t remain chained in this manner any longer!

I struggled frantically, twisting and pulling at the chains as hard as I could, snarling. I couldn’t! I couldn’t! Please, let me go!

Exhausted again. I slumped back, head against the cold stones. I tried to lift my head as it fell against my right arm, but couldn’t. My eyes were beginning to drift shut. No! Stay awake! My body wouldn’t listen to me, though.

Blood. I could smell it. But I couldn’t move to it! I was stuck, alone! So, so dark…no! Please, the blood! Give it to me! You can’t keep doing this to me!

Even after the men were gone, the scent of blood lingered in the air. I was drooling now. I was surprised I was even able to produce any sort of liquid anymore. How long was this going to last? When would they kill me?

I could hear them again, skittering around in the dark, the dull, resounding noise of their heartbeats echoing mockingly in my head. Distraughtly, I tried to lift my head, to no avail. There was nothing I could do. I was trapped, helpless. Oh, please, God just kill me. I can't go on living with this pain.

Yet go on I did. Nights and days passed, but I didn’t notice as they slipped by. All I knew was that I had waking moments and the rest was blurry, hopeful dreams of blood.

“Wake up, please. Eden, my darling, please, open your eyes.” Veronica?

“It is no use.” That voice…that…that’s Lucan’s voice.

“Don’t give up hope so easily. Eden, we’ve come for you. Your family is here.”

I wanted to say something, desperately needed to say something! They were here! They were going to get me out! And then those horrible ones that had kept me in here, out of the light and away from sound and sight! Let me out! GET ME OUT!!

I could taste it, hot on my tongue, burning as it went down my throat. Blood, a lot of human blood. No sound, not now, not anymore. The hot blood flowed and there was nothing I could do. My tongue wanted it and my mouth sought it out.

Still couldn’t see, no, but better. Outlines of shapes before me were visible, two figures in front of me. But they didn’t matter; there was blood and that was all. Insensible still, I knew, but slowly growing easier to actually think. I wanted to be with my maker and his mate. I wanted to be with my family and they were finally here!

“Lucan,” I murmured, spilling blood all down my face. My struggling victim snarled and thrashed and screamed with frustration and terror, still able to make me fight to keep him even with the blood loss. I growled at him, knowing he was one of the ones who’d tortured me. He deserves this, I thought to myself, wrenching him back to me.

“Yes, son,” he said, sounding relieved and happy, putting a hand on my face. The sense of comfort that gentle touch gave me can’t be described. Needless to say, I found myself suddenly weeping.

“Don’t cry, darling,” Veronica soothingly said. She brushed her fingers through my hair, making my scalp tingle at the contact. There’d been so little contact, except for the painful kind, that I nearly screamed at the feeling. They’re here, my family is here…

“We love you,” Lucan whispered to me and pressed my lips back to the throat. I drank in ravenous, savage gulps. The blood made me reel, so hot, so…

Cold, harshly cold, water ran over me and I was startled into wakefulness. My arms were numb and hanging above me still. My back, so, so sore, still lay against the hard stone wall. The shock of cold water made my back arch and my limbs quake, weary though I was. Then I realized, it’d all been a dream again.

“No!” I screamed into the darkness around me, fighting, fighting so hard to break away from the horrid metal around my wrist and ankles.

Laughter. They were laughing at me now. Because they had me trapped, and I was unable to stop them from keeping me. And my family was not here.
