That night the phone rings....mom answers the phone.
“Hello....Hey Dy how are you?”....Oh my goodness.
Moms whole continents changed. Mom is crying, and me, I’m enjoying my presents. Later, mom runs towards me.
“Hey mo you came over just right in time”
“Ruth there’s something you need to know”
“Ok but look.”
“ I’m so sorry Ruth.”
“What are you talking about?”
Mom sits down with me and lets me know that my grandfather had just passed away. After that I storm off. I sat in the corner alone crying. Mad and overwhelmed.
August 25, 2003, I wake up from a good night’s sleep. I’m 8 years old. Yay! So geeked because my parents planned a birthday party just for me. It was just what I wanted.
“Hey mom did you get the cake?”
“Dad did you get the balloons?”
“Yes girl, got the cake.”
“Yes Ruth, got all the balloons you wanted.”
Its 2:00 p.m and I start getting dressed and ready for my birthday party and all my friends were arriving. They all brought me presents when they came.
“Hey Ruth, Happy Birthday.”
“Thanks so much.”
“Haha all these presents for me.. Yeeesss!!
After everyone arrived and got settled, we put some music on and started to dance. We all were having a wonderful time.
“ aayyy party over here haha” (Music Playing).
Then everyone got tired and hungry.
“Woooo I’m beat.”
“Yeah and I’m hungry, hey Ruth anything to eat”
So we all got something to eat, and just started to reminisce on different funny memories. We were all laughing and having a good time.
“ Hey Ms. Madison this food is great. Best food I ever had.”
“ Hey remember that time Ruth fell off the swing... that was so funny”
Later that afternoon, my mom came out singing Happy Birthday, and my friends and siblings all joined in.
“Happy Birthday dear Ruth.. Happy Birthday to You”.
After they finished singing, I blew out my 8 candles and my mom and I cut the cake.
“ Here you go...a piece for you and you”
Everyone was enjoying themselves. Everybody then left and went home.
“ Great party, bye Ruth.”
“ Bye Bye, thanks for coming.”
So my mom, my siblings and I cleaned up. We all laughed and talked about how great the party was.
“ Yo I had a great time today at my party. Thanks mom and dad for everything.”
“It was everything I wanted.”
That Sunday at 10:00 a.m in Suffolk, Virginia me and my family went to my grandfathers funeral. All of us in a limo. Silence the whole way there. At the church, sitting with my parents and siblings. With a big burgundy casket in front of us. After the funeral we all get back in the limo and head for the cemetery. At the burial everyone gets outta the car but and my grandmother. Looking through the window. Watching my grandfather go down to rest in peace.
