No Such Thing
By Ryan M. Akers

Every child has heard a false statement before,
When darkness causes fear and parents come through the door,
Turn on the light and look under the bed,
Assure the closet is empty and pet your sweaty head

They smile and sit bedside as you clinch the sheet,
Tell you not to worry and have dreams so sweet,
Not to worry about the night or the dread it may bring:
“Monsters, my darling, there’s no such thing.”

I recall those words many years ago,
As I sit in the shadow and must forego
Any thought that there is truth in that reassurance
Monsters are among us in repeated occurrence

The night is dark, a whispering wind
Tells tales of horror no one likes to spend
Time thinking terror will befall you
But I’ve seen enough to know it’s true.

On any given day, just review the news
You’ll see the evidence in livid hues
Terrible stories of violence and loss
Tossed openly like used dental floss

Vampires roam the streets at night
Bloodsuckers preying on wicked plight
Hunting down the innocent with demonic greed
Destroying the lives on which they feed

Werewolves stalking on a full moon,
Transforming women on which they swoon,
Ripping at lust, emitting a howl,
Robbing sexual innocence with a sinister growl

Ghosts of circumstance renew and constitute
Irreparable harm to diligence so absolute
Passion and persistence cannot abide
Leaving careers in deadlock or suicide

Devils on the warpath with fire in hand
Terrorizing and traumatizing across the land
Bending the rules, striking evil will
Until someone steps up, someone to kill

Zombies litter the corners, drunk & unseen
Still watching others intently with eyes keen
Waiting in which the moment to strike
Attacking with vengeance and silence alike

Deformities of the brain bring the insane
Bogeymen in blue suits smiling through pain
Going home to mistreat their wives
Abusing fidelity from doubt in their lives

Just a sample of so many monsters I see
Around the block on a walk all coming after me
Ducking and diving out of the path they roam
I lock my doors and hide in my home.

So don’t ever tell me there’s no such thing
Of monsters in reality when I hear screams ring
Off the walls of buildings, off the television screen
People screaming in dins once the horror is seen.
