Death, is not an evil
November 5th 2004. L's funeral, everyone sat in silence, after all it was a secret funeral. The distant sounds of footsteps and faint sobs were heard. The door creaked open and all the group
members’ attention was directed to a single woman's tall and beautiful figure. Light was shocked; in fact every member of the investigation group present was shocked. The slim figure stumbled
towards the solitary coffin which lay right in front of them. Tears splashed down and soaked the carpet. Her arms encircled L’s lifeless body and wept.
A worried face approached her and asked her if something was wrong. But by the look on the man’s face she understood he meant to ask her who the hell she was. She looked at the man in disgust. Her
clear voice rang through the room “I’m Dia Hughes.” Her accent clearly showed her to be British, but her wheatish skin and name gave away the fact that she was part Indian. Light walked towards her
“What is your business here? You are not invited to a private funeral” Her reply was curt, but it didn’t answer anybody’s question, as to who she was. She said “I go wherever he goes, and whatever
happens I’m with him.” This just made the group wonder even more as to how she was related to L. They decided it was best to leave her till she was ready to tell them who she was.
She clung to L’s body for more than an hour. Her eyes were red and constantly filled with tears and every second, one flowed down her pale cheek onto his cold face. Everyone in the room other than
the young woman felt uncomfortable. Other than Light and Misa, that is, they were rejoicing their victory in silence. But Light felt uncomfortable because he had a vague feeling the woman Dia
Hughes was watching him through her tears. He watched her closely and noticed with shock her lips coming in contact with L’s pale white skin. But noticed that she made sure no one was looking at
her. He was disgusted and turned away. Was she related to L? Had she anything to do with Watari? Was she one of their protégée? All he knew was that she knew L intimately; she could be of use to
him to find out if he had any more rivals. His scheming mind went to work once again.
Dia had finished her wish to see L. She now had a burden to carry alone. She didn’t want to let go. But as Charlotte Perkins Gilman once said -
“Death is the essential condition of life, not an evil.”
This one quote kept her from losing herself. With one last kiss, one last look, she got up and moved away from the lifeless body. She had now completed her objective. She walked towards the door,
only to be followed by Light. Light asked her if she was alright and if she wanted help to get a taxi. She replied “To accept help from the enemy isn’t the smartest thing to do. Especially after he
has made sure your fiancé has been killed.” Looking at Light’s confused face she calmly added “Oh yes Mr. Yagami, I know all that has happened. After all, L is my fiancé and the father of the child
in my womb” Light stared at the figure moving away from him in absolute confusion and shock. She was the wife of L and the mother of his (L’s) child. A victorious smile spread on her lips and the
look of confusion remained on his face.
