Nicki Silverpike had never been the smart one. She'd never been the pretty one, and she'd never been the strong one. She was something some people may call 'abnormal', or what may others call 'alien'; but to her older brother and legal guardian, Nicki would always be 'special'. With her golden honey skin and charcoal eyes paired with hair woven from silver, she was always the laughing stock of the school for being simply abnormal. Always the dunce. The oddball. The wanna-be and the victim. And Nicki had hated it. She had hated it, but had held onto the burden. The only thing that gave her the reason to still be alive was her brother. That, and her strange ability to spin life with sound--the excitement of a movie to a wild wolf, or maybe even the long tunes of a piano to a flying whale. But soon, her world so shabbily built came crashing down one Saturday night in the silhouette of a simple knife... and Nicki went from the dreary 13 year old girl who spent too much time on homework to the runaway with only one fear--herself.
