The story behind this poem is a bit strange. I was riding in the car on my way across the country to visit colleges and was staring at the guardrail as it flew by outside the window. I don't know, the way the light hit it, something about it created this poem.

Outside the Window

The pearl light of a roadside rail

Calls me.

Stretched like an elastic saxophone.

Singing elbow rhythms,

Dancing hips,

Strained ears cannot hear.

I know what you are looking for.

It is everywhere.
