Beauty is never skin deep

I stopped looking with my eyes and I saw the beauty in his crooked teeth, irregularly sized eyes and the scar across his hairy chest. My heart swayed and my soul danced when he spoke; his voice was deep and his words were sweet. He was the epitome of perfection but my joy had to be hidden since sharing it with the world meant ridicule or death.  Fredrick was the first and the last of his kind. His enemies were my enemies.

"Who did this?" Fredrick rubbed his nose against the bruise on my cheek.

"No one," I shook my head.

"It was Hunter. Wasn't it? He put his filthy hands on you. Why hasn’t Ethan done anything about Hunter?" Fredrick snarled.

"Fredrick," I raised my hands. "We will find a way that doesn't involve you killing Hunter," I placed my hand on his cheek.

"Why won't you let me kill him?" Fredrick walked to the end of the abandoned house.

"You're not a monster," I held out my hand.

"I am. This is why I’ve never met anyone you know. Are you ashamed? Is it the burns on my back? Is it my height? Is it my build? Is it my mysterious past? Are you afraid of what the world would think?" Fredrick crossed his arms.

"I can't believe you would say that to me," I bit the corner of my bottom lip. "I have given up everything to be with you," I stomped my feet.

"That is an interesting choice of words," he stared at his large bare feet.

"You know what I meant," I grunted.

"I don't. If you want to go, you should leave," he cleared his throat.

"I don't want to go. Why are you being like this?" I frowned.

"You want to be with Ethan. He looks like he is meant to be with you. I am ugly. You deserve someone like him," he turned away.

"I'll fix this," I left.

I brought Fredrick an unwrapped gift when I returned later that night. I handed him the picture.

"What did you do?" Fredrick growled.

"I needed to prove to you that you were the only one," I wrapped my arms around him.

"I should have done it. At least then," Fredrick sighed.

"You're good and I didn't want to change that," I rested my hand on his cheek.

"You were good too," he shook his head.

"I am still good," I kissed his forehead. "I killed Ethan for us and now we can be together," I pressed my ear against his chest.
