They stared at each other. Her beautifully green eyes burned into his intense blue eyes. Months led up to this point, and if the words were exchanged, it would be the end. Almost as if on cue, the band started playing, the beautiful yet sad melodic bliss ‘Into Dust’ started wafting through the small, yet crowed restaurant. They had managed to blissfully bypass this conversation for months, but now sitting across from each other; they had to, there was no other choice.
She was the first to look away; the tears already gathering in her eyes. “ Just say it..” she muttered, her voice defeated. He looked at her. The love he felt for her words could never describe. His desire to spend each morning waking up to her face burned his insides. He was the one to make the mistake; yet both of them were being punished.
-------
Three months earlier
Adele Smith couldn’t help the smile that formed on her face as she watched her husband of a year play with his niece. He would make a great father; and the love for his niece just proved that point. But as Adele looked at her husband, she couldn’t help the feeling like she was being watched. Looking towards the entrance of the park, Adele noticed a woman looking directly at her. The woman started approaching Adele; but as she passed her she dropped an envelope on Adele’s lap.
Adele started to speak, until she looked down at the envelope. ‘To Adele.’ Adele looked towards her husband, considering opening it. After a moment she shrugged, then almost like a criminal she carefully opened it. Slightly confused she pulled the three pictures out of the envelope. She gasped, blushing brightly as she looked at the couple in the photo locked in a very intimate embrace; but just as she was about to put the pictures back in the envelope she noticed it.
Bringing the picture closer to her face; tears immediately formed and her heart turned to ice. Written on the mans left shoulder was a tattooed inscription. ‘ Your unending love has become my addiction. Your beautiful smiles have become my only desires. The warmth of your heart has become my only need. You my dearest, Adele, have become my only life source.’ Adele attempted to calm her heart as she stared unseeingly at the photo in her hands. When she heard her husbands voice; she hurriedly placed the photos in her purse. As she was closing her purse; she couldn’t help but feel as if she was closing a part of her heart.

Present
Sean looked at his wife. What could he tell her? I’m sorry it’ll never happen again? He knew if he said that she’d never speak to him again; not that he didn’t deserve it. But he didn’t want to loose his wife; she was his everything and without her, everything seemed so gloom. He couldn’t ask her to forgive him; how would he do that anyways? How do you ask the persons heart in which you just tore into piece, how do you ask them to forgive you? He attempted to think of what he would have wanted her to do if she was the one who made the mistake; but he couldn’t because he knew that she would never do anything like this.
As he looked at her; he tried to comprehend her pain, but he couldn’t. He wanted to make himself feel her pain, but nothing came to him. He wished he could touch her and make her sadness go away; but she wouldn’t allow him to touch her. When she looked at him, it caused him to realize the extent of his mistake. Her normally always shining eyes now stared at him with dislike, and distrust. But it scared him when he noticed the life seemed to have been drained from her, making her seem so venerable.
“ How many times?” she asked, looking away from him. Sean sighed at the complete loss of connection with her.
“ Twice.” he stated, his voice coming out barely above a whisper.
“ The same one each time, or different ones?” she questioned still not making eye contact.
“ Same one.” he replied, his wife nodded her head remaining silent for several moments.
“ Do you love her?” she asked suddenly, now making eye contact with him.

Two and half months earlier
Sean could feel the tension rolling off his wife. Instructively he placed his arm around her shoulders; causing her to calm down. He looked down at her, but she refused to make eye-contact with him. Sean cleared his throat before continuing his conversation with the two man standing in front of him. Sean looked at her curiously, when she politely excused herself. Just as he was turning back towards his conversation he noticed a familiar face glaring at him. Slightly taken back Sean turned and looked at his wife’s retreating back, something clicking.
He watched as his wife walked past the other woman; but the other woman’s arm snaked out grapping a hold of his wife’s arm. Slowly his wife turned towards the woman holding onto her arm, then before she realized what she was doing; her hand connected with the other woman’s cheek. Sean started to make his way towards his wife and the other woman but when his wife looked at him, he stopped dead in his tracks. Never once had her beautiful green eyes looked so disgusted.
Before he could stop her, his wife walked away; closing herself completely to him. When it hit him; it was like a sudden epiphany. She knew of his idiotic mistake; a mistake he had promised himself time and time again he wouldn’t make. But now she knew.

Present
Sean stared down at Adele’s beautifully torn face. He could see the tears forming in her eyes; threatening to spill. “ No. I don’t love her.” he stated simply, keeping eye contact with her. After a moment Adele nodded her, knowing he wasn’t lying. They both kept silent for several minutes; neither truly knowing what to say, yet wanting to say so many things. Adele placed her head in her hands as a few tears escaped; Sean’s hand itched so badly to hold her, whisper love words to her.
As Adele silently cried, the music shifted, the sweet words of ‘Lovesong’ floating through the air. As Adele listened to the lyrics she couldn’t help the small smile that formed on her face. If she had heard the song three months prior then the lyrics would have fit her and her husband perfectly. But right now the sweet love words just made her feel lonely.
When Adele looked up, Sean felt his heart skip a beat; even while crying she was the most beautiful woman in the world to him. “ Why?” she whispered the simply yet destructive question. It was the same question Sean had been asked himself for the past several months. Why did he do it?
After moment Sean answered her honestly, “ I don’t know why.”. Adele looked at him with a confused expression. Sean considered his next words very carefully; not want to break the extremely thin ice he was on. “ I had never found her attractive. Not that there was anything wrong with her, she’s a nice enough woman; I just wasn’t interested in her. But then when we had the argument about moving I was angry and decided to stay late at work; and it just so happened that she was there..” he stopped, not sure if he should say anymore.
“ Why’d you do it the second time?” Adele questioned.
“ The first time, I couldn’t even finish; so I told her it was a mistake and that I wouldn’t do it again. Well she didn’t like that. A few days after the incident she came by my office; she started telling me about how she had proof of what we did and that if I didn’t do what she asked, she’d send you the proof. So for what ever stupid reason, I listened to her.” he explained. Adele could tell by the quiver in his voice he was telling the truth.
“ But you ended up refusing?” she asked, trying her hardest to understand.
“ Whenever I touched her, all I could think about was you, and if you ever found out how badly it would hurt you. But I also had the power to make sure you didn’t find out; but I just couldn’t stomach it anymore. So I told her no.” he said.
“ Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked, catching Sean off guard. He had never thought to tell her; he had always assumed that it would have broken her heart.
“ I didn’t want to hurt you.” he replied. Adele looked at him with a sad smile on her face.
“ I think I would have preferred you tell me, than to have someone else do it.” she stated. Sean nodded his head in understanding. Once again silence fell upon their table; neither this time feeling like talking.
Adele wondered if she could forgive him. Would their relationship change dramatically from this? Did he actually love her, or was he afraid of being alone? Was she so afraid of being alone that she’d just forgive him? Each of those thought scared Adele. They scared her because she secretly felt most of them might be true. She wasn’t sure how to tell what the truth was. She didn’t know how to choose between her brain and her heart. She still loved her husband despite the terrible pain he had caused her. Had she wanted to wish so deeply that he still loved her, and the words he had spoken were true.
“ I remember the time that Lindsey Xavier had attempted to take you away from me. I remember thinking that you guys seemed to be perfect for each other. Jessica told me I was insane to not believe that you loved me, but no matter what everyone said, I just couldn’t; until that day that Lindsey left Kendall’s party crying.” Adele paused, smiling at the memory. “ Almost every person told me that you had told Lindsey if she didn’t stay away from you, you’d tell her father she was giving blowjobs to each of the football players in the locker room.” Both Adele and Sean laughed; for the first time in a long time.
As their laughter died down, they stared intently at each other. “ I’m so sorry I did this.” Sean said his voice so sad and so sincere that it was hard not to believe him. After a moment Adele nodded her head.
“ I know you are Sean.” she stated. Sean couldn’t help but smile when a familiar song started playing. Adele also smiled and started humming the lyrics. “ So many memories to this song.” she said with a sad smile. Sean stood up, holding his hand out; after a moment of hesitation Adele took it.
Adele cuddled into Sean’s arms as they slowly danced in little circles. It was the first time in a long time that allowed him to touch her, and having his arms around her was wonderful. She felt protected and loved. Something she had missed dearly. As the song slowly went on she realized that no man could ever make her feel the way Sean could. No other man could love her the way he loved her. Yes, he did make a mistake that broke her heart; but she loved him enough to forgive and forget.
When the songs music slowly descended indicating its end, Adele stopped moving, causing Sean to also stop. She looked up at him as he looked down at her. She brought her hand to his cheek, gently tracing the familiar curved of his face; the very face she had grown to love more than herself. “ I love you because you aren’t perfect. I have always loved every small imperfect part of you. From the way you snore so loudly at night that I often have to push you off the bed in order to fall asleep; to the way you stare at me with such love that scares me when I wake up in the morning.” she said, her voice light and soft, showing the truth in her words.
Sean kissed the tip of her nose. “ I love every little imperfect part of you. I love how every night when we go to bed you get up almost exactly fifteen minutes later because you realized you didn’t pee. I love the way your always constantly worry about everyone else. I love how you don’t judge anyone; no matter what they’ve done. I love that weird face you make when you tired, then the way you rub your eyes. All of your small imperfections make you perfect in my eyes.” he stated.
The applause that erupted scared the young couple. Looking around themselves; obviously having been lost in their own world, they hadn’t noticed the people surrounding them, watching and listening to their words. Looking back each other they couldn’t help the goofy grins that grew.
Sean looked down at his wife’s lips before looking back into her eyes; she smiled at him. Taking the hint Sean gently grabbed Adele’s head and brought his lips down to hers. Adele put her hands in his hair as their lips touched. Sean placed a hand behind her neck and the other around her back, forcing her closer to him; leaving no space between them. Their kiss was sweet; filled with so much promise. Promise of the future, and promise of the past.
When they pulled back for breathe they kept their eyes locked; her eyes filled with tears wanting to escape, and his filled with such love that the sun paled in comparison. After a moment they brought their face back together, whispering ‘I love you’s’ before their lips connected once again.
All had yet to be forgiven, but this was their happy ending; if it could be called such. Their love is rare; something most people risk their lives to come across just to have a slight taste of it. And while he made the unforgivable mistake, and it broke her heart; he would be the only person to be able to put her torn heart together. They love will never be perfect, for what is the definition of perfection? But the love they have to give, can only be received between themselves. They’re imperfect love was meant for each other in this imperfect world…
