21st Century Saints
The definition of a saint is a person acknowledged as holy or virtuous and regarded in Christian faith as being in heaven after death. However the Saints we need and have today are not floating above us looking down, they are walking this earth and living their lives as regular people. Maybe today you walked past a Saint and you didn’t even realise it. The saints we need today are not necessarily the people who spend every waking moment praying, they are those do what they can to make life better for somebody, somewhere and expect nothing in return.
It is the 21st century and despite major medical and scientific advances. There is still War, violence, oppression and exploitation. Today, we need saints more than ever, but we need everybody to be a saint. Our world is very sick and we need saints who will use their own individual resources and talents to help create the most important medicine we could ever have, a cure for our sick world.
We have made significant technological advancements and this means that, today we need saints who will ‘Tweet’ about how they are improving the world, saints who will upload YouTube videos of their work, and post inspiring photos on Instagram. The internet has replaced other means of communication and we need saints who would recognise and take advantage of this. Can you imagine what an impact it would have if a modern day saint updated his or her Facebook status to advise and preach to people. Over 500million people now use Facebook, this is simply too good an opportunity to ignore so Internet Literate saints are absolute must today.
We need Saints of Truth, I often think that if everybody in the world just told the truth we wouldn’t have half as many problems. I know it’s not quite as simple as that, sometimes a little white lie here and there is completely justifiable. But think of all the corrupt governments lying to their people and how these lies effect the whole country. On a smaller scale think of how many lies the average Irish teenager tells every day, to avoid punishment, conflict or simply to avoid having to do something they are too lazy to do. This may seem harmless but say one Saturday night you lie to your parents about where you are, what if something happens to you? Your parents don’t know where you are, and it may be the last lie you ever tell. With all of the dangers this world has, now more than ever the truth is so important and we definitely need the kind of saints who will be advocates for honesty.
Today, we need saints of equality, it deeply angers me that all humans are born the same way with the right to an equal share of this planet, so why do some people see other people as below them? We are all human-a diverse species of different genders, ages, colours, nationalities. We need a saint who will show the world that what is best for us all is to work together to improve our world, embrace our differences and realise that whether you are a worker in a sweatshop in China, a hairdresser in Dublin or the president of the USA, you have the same rights and the same importance as everybody else. We need the kind of saints who will strive for every human to live a life free from oppression or inequality.
We need saints of Joy, imagine if we had somebody who could just sprinkle joy over our lives. Because at the end of the day everything we do has the ultimate goal of improving our happiness. We need several things to make us happy, some of these being truth and equality. Think of all the wars, the protests, the murders on our streets, this all happens when people aren’t happy, so surely it is pragmatic to say that today we need Saints who spread Joy. If people are happier, the world is a better place and that’s what we want isn’t it? We want to cure our sick world.
It is a changing world and today we need the kind of saints who will be advocates for truth, equality and Joy. We need saints who will use the internet as a powerful means of communication with the planet’s inhabitants. Yes, today we need different kinds of saints and they are all around you.
