These voices, I remember hearing them the other day. The voices of break down and hatred started to attack me; from how I’m really judgmental or how I hit some girl when I really didn’t but people started to make up things as the event was passed down from people to people. Gossiping has always been a around with us. Today, I would like to talk about how gossiping creates insecurity, how it exaggerates rumors, and how it leads to harmful consequences. Then, I would like to discuss some solutions to this action.
First of all, I would like to dig into the fact that gossiping mostly gives insecurity. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of gossiping is idle talk or rumor, especially about the personal or private affairs of others. For example, if I had a man talk with a friend and he starts telling me about how he’s going through changes and how he had his first kiss. Now, if I transition from this friend to another friend and talk about what my other friend had told me. “Oh my gosh, did you hear that this guy JUST went through his manly changes? And he’s like 16, and he JUST got his first kiss.” Now this can result in two ways. It can either go as, “dude that’s perfectly normal” or it could go as “oh my gosh, he’s a total loser.” Believe it or not, the mysterious boy, or now, man, is I. And things, didn’t really work out for me. Other guys started to make fun of me, saying how I’m such a loser (blah blah blah), but they haven’t noticed what I was going through. I really didn’t mind the name calling, but I felt this betrayal and felt alone.
Another thing about gossiping is that people tend to exaggerate rumors. For example, the website, TMZ.com, is a daily updated website where people write articles about celebrity gossip. Most of these articles are usually exaggerated and used to merely put down celebrities. Now, this website is a fairly popular website that people visit. Some people visit because they want to be updated with celebrities. But the whole purpose of this website is for celebrity gossip. Yes, it’ll give people something to talk about, but it can lead people to twist the words and personally offend the celebrity themselves.
Finally, gossiping can lead to harmful consequences. In the article, Four Women Fired for Gossiping, it is said that in a town of Hooksett, New Hampshire, four town employees, with 46 years of dedication, was fired merely because of a gossiping of another employee. Interviews say that it was a tragedy for them and they would want their job back. From this, we can clearly see how gossiping can make someone lose their job.
Today, we have looked how gossiping is a very cruel trend that people still do. We’ve talked about how it gives insecurity, exaggeration, and harmful consequences. Now, it seems like we’re at a downfall, but there are solutions. It can be either changing the topic and avoiding the gossiping topic or it can go to another direction that may a little peculiar. It is to simply talk about how they can help the situation rather than gossiping about it. It would be so much productive if people started to actually do something rather than being passive and criticizing. So next time, when you talk to someone, think about what you guys are going to talk about. It can either be about how guys are actually smarter than girls or how not to be a loser. I leave you with a quote by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, “If you haven’t got anything nice to say about anyone, come sit next to me”.
